My boss and I were just discussing the whole re-alignment of pretty much the whole nation, and it brought up a couple of interesting thoughts regarding the left over teams.

Assuming each major conference goes to 16 teams at the end of this (SEC, PAC, BIG ACC), that will leave 55 Teams left in smaller conferences.

The train of thought would be that obviously these teams would align into their own large conferences to maximize revenue and possibly create their own TV networks, following suit of the larger conferences.

So basically, you would be looking at

PAC(16)
SEC(16)
BIG(16)
ACC(16)
ND(Independent)

Then

MAC(14)
CUSA(14)
MWC(14)
WAC(12)

So essentially you would have 8 "super conferences."

At that point, it would be feasible to give each conference a BCS automatic qualifier and would possibly create more pressure to take the champion of each conference and develop a playoff system from that. This would eliminate (to an extent) the screams of unfairness from teams like Boise and give them a fair shot.

Not saying it is likely, nor am I saying it will come to pass. Just thought it was an interesting idea considering the massive conference hopping that looks to be happening soon.

Thoughts?

no, you will have 4 SC's and those 4 will leave the NCAA and form their own association. The schools left out would be like 1-AA and compete for their own MNC
