quote:

Before the vote, a regent gave Baylor president Herbert Reynolds a T-shirt that said, "If you are going to run with the big dogs, you have to get off the porch."

School officials said they think the Bears can be one of the big dogs in NCAA Division I athletics, thanks to the expected move of four SWC schools to the Big Eight in the fall of 1996.

quote:

Baylor was the first school whose regents voted on the matter. Regents at A&M, Tech and Texas will discuss the issue today or Friday.

quote:

"We are certainly saddened by the demise of the Southwest Conference," Powers said. "I think it was something that was going to happen sooner or later.

"We certainly wish those who did not receive an invitation well. I feel sure they are fine institutions and they will find a place in some other program that will be appropriate for them."

yea, but ken starr, aka the biggest scumbag lawyer in the country, is now running the show at baylor and looking for money. he seems to think a&m leaving will net them lots of money one way or the other. in light of precedence already set (va tech, miami, boston college, colorado, nebraska, etc) he doesn't have a leg to stand on.

The hypocrisy of Baylor is beyond galling.

Good find.

They were more than happy to give the finger to other Texas schools like SMU, TCU, Houston and Rice.

Their newfound love of all things Texas is laughable.

quote:

Reynolds also thanked state Sen. David Sibley of Waco; state Sen. John Montford of Lubbock, president pro tem of the Senate and chair of the Senate Finance Committee; state Rep. Rob Junell of San Angelo, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee; and House Speaker Pete Laney of Hale Center.
Montford, Junell and Laney are Texas Tech graduates who stated publicly two years ago that they would use their political clout to prevent Texas and Texas A&M from leaving the SWC for the SEC.

Oh, and Texas Tech: frick you too.

The only reason Baylor and Tech were opposed to A&M and Texas going to the SEC was because they couldn't come along for the party. They preferred to be in a Texas dominated Big 12. Any conference that lets Texas dominate (league office in Dallas, championship game sited in Dallas, etc) is doomed to fail. If they want a conference where Texas schools are dominant, they should have kept the old SWC instead of giving the finger to SMU, TCU, Rice and Houston. They reaped what they sowed. frick 'em.

quote:

None of the Baylor officials was sure what the new conference would be called.
"Some said since there were 12 schools, it would be the Dirty Dozen," said James Netherington, vice president for administrative affairs. "But with Baylor involved, it would have to be the 12 Apostles."

Pharisees or Hypocrites is more like it...

ETA: Baylor: First Texas school to secede from the SWC. Because they love Texas football that much.

That was a great find.......Baylor is now saying we can't break up 108 years of history with A&M, but they were the first to tell Rice, TCU, Houston and SMU "good look with your endeavors"

the Baylor way, as long as I get my way the Hell with everybody else.

Didn't the Big East or the Cuse try to sue the ACC for raiding them and taking Va Tech and Miami? What was the outcome of that lawsuit? I bet that it's still pending.
