Why is Betty Draper (Mad Men) such a cnut?

Watching Mad Men on Netflix and this girl is a raging bitch. She hates her kids, her ex husband, her current husband and everyone in between. Why is she such a stuck up snotty whore?

Don Draper is the star...they want him with all the beautiful babes...so we have some sympathy for him or at the very least forgive his infidelity. If Betty was a perfect wife, his escapades wouldn't go over so well.

That's the impression I got even from watching just a handful of episodes from the first season.
It takes a lot of maneuvering to make Don Draper a sympathetic character.

She was raised as a spoiled princess only to find recently that living as one isn't enough for real happiness, and she (subconsciously and consciously) blames Don for breaking that dream with his lies/infidelity.
And yes, she has turned into one crazy bitch.

I actually find the bitchy angry moments in the last couple of seasons to be a welcome diversion from every other performance Jones has ever given on screen: the cold fish.

She's necessary. As someone explained earlier, it paints Don Draper as more of a sympathetic character that people want to watch and pull for.

Eh. I don't really agree with this if you really pay attention to what's going on. I just find them both somewhat detestable.

They haven't gone into her history, but we know that her mother treated her like crap.
The episode where she got off on her daughter crying... there's something seriously wrong with Betty.

Betty is still in many ways a child (driven home by that dollhouse scene last season).
But she's also become one of my most hated characters because she's so damned selfish. A complete 180 from the first season where I loved when she was firing guns in the air.
