I remembered this being a good movie when I was a kid. I watched it again last night and I noticed a couple things

SPOILERS:

How could Milano screw up his plan at the cabin in the woods? Seems pretty damn simple. And since Azazel seemed surprised by Hobbes' exact same plan, my guess is that Milano DID go out there to kill himself. Or maybe he went out there for another reason and ended up killing himself.

Second: Does Hobbes really need to kill himself to execute the plan successfully? I say no. He shoots Jonesy. While his fat as is sitting there dying slowly, he could pop him once in each knee, get in the car and drive off. I'm sure he could make it 500 cubits (1/6 mile) before Jonesy dies.

Anyway, seems like I like the idea a lot more than the way they executed it in this movie. Dare I say, it could make a great remake?

At the end, it wouldn't have mattered because of his ability to possess an animal.

Always thought that part of it was a pretty big FU to the audience.

I know, they even showed it possessing a cat earlier. As a kid, I liked the twist, because of the voice narration an all (which wouldn't make sense if it was in a cat at the end, but I digress). When I watched it last night, left me a little bitter.

At the very least, the demon would be in a cat, out in the middle of nowhere, and have a hell of a time getting back to Hobbes.

I remember loving this movie because the bad guy wins, but I don't remember much about the parameters of how he can pass from person to person (or thing). Might need to rewatch, but I remember really liking it back in the day.

i always wondered what were the limits of what he could possess. can he possess something as small as a beetle or a fly?

he would never die because in almost every case there would be something living near the place where his current host dies.

yep, they don't address that. I guess it would be any small to large mammal?

Also, it passes by touch, but it can't enter Hobbes that way. It doesn't say why. That's key to the plot and it seems like a good place for some more mythology/backstory on the demon, but we get nothing.

Even though I've seen it several times, I'm already too fuzzy on the details to answer the OP question. This is one of the few movies that is made better by the fact that the explanation is supernatural.

I never understood the can't enter Hobbs or Milano by touch story line. It's obviously not a religious explanation, not due to their awareness of it's existence, etc.

There is absolutely no reason given why it can't pass by touch to Hobbs/Milano. I thought it might be a family thing but Milano's daughter obviously feared being touched so she was available.

That aspect makes no sense and is a loose end.

What would it have mattered? He killed his superior and partner according to the rest of the world. Might as well die and take the fricking demon with you instead of running for the rest of your life.
