Little things on offense that are encouraging

We didn’t waste time outs because of delays in getting the plays in, delays in getting out of the huddle, confusion in alignment or delays in making reads and checking off. As a result, we started the last drive of the first half with all three of our timeouts still on the board.
JL was consistently getting the play called and breaking huddle with 20 to 25 seconds left on the play clock. He was making his reads and checking off when needed with at least 8 to 10 seconds left. No hurried snaps and no delay of game penalties.
No illegal formation penalties.
The “hurry up” at the end of the first half was executed quickly and smoothly. The timeouts were used at the right time.
We scored 40 points in our opening game against the #3 team in the nation. We didn’t score 40 points last year until the Nov. 13 game against ULM.
There is lots of room for improvement on offense, but for the first game of the season these are encouraging signs.

Yep. At times watching the 2010 offense was like listening to a Barack Obama speech. Downright painful to endure.

i agree 100%. i also attribute that to GC's being gone. i know GC had some damn good plays and that Miles probably dictated a lot of what he could call but our O's confusion, imo, was a direct result of an OC that constantly second guessed the competition and himself and was way too complicated with his player groupings. our O could not get a flow. we may not be innovative right now, but we have a flow and i think it gives us a better chance to win games (and maybe not every game coming down to the last minute of the game). i believe we will improve a lot on offense and if JL will ever get "comfortable" and gain some confidence, i believe we have a great shot at winning the SEC.

Great insight, Fabius. I hadn't considered that. The one thing that did occur to me is the lack of stupid penalties. For a first game, LSU was refreshingly free of penalties.

Totally agree. JL was getting the play within 5 to 10 seconds and it seemed clear that his pre-snap reads were much simpler than whatever they were doing under GC.

I really liked how smooth we looked on Offense. We weren't flashy or complicated, but it looked like we did what we did well (not great, or even good most of the time, but better than last year).

Good post.
I said that JL looked confindent and in control.. announcers even said our offense looked like it had more continutity than last year.
All the things you mentioned plus audible, and check offs are things a qb has to do that dont count in the stat column.
Jlee will improve every game.

It was nice to see an offense with an identity and play to their strengths, not force anything.
I'll also add, actually scoring TDs after turnovers. Remember we had lots of trouble scoring points when given easy opportunities.
The passing game has to get going. I know it was the first game, but we are also going to play better defenses then Oregon this season. I don't know why we didn't use Randle more, but Deangelo Peterson was huge, and will be key especially with Shepard out.

It was also nice that we threw the ball out of the "I" (or Power "I" Musberger the dumbass called is several times) a few times, so as not to be completely predictable.
One of my biggest gripes of the last couple of years has been the predictability of the offense based on personnel and formation.

Great post. A lot of the issue with Randle is that they were doubling him with a safety over the top. These younger guys stepping up will help.

Agree with this -- all very encouraging. (One delay of game on a punt but the overall thread is correct).
It will be interesting to watch the game plans unfold over the course of the season. This game plan was designed to take advantage of a specific physical mismatch on the o-line vs. their d-line. It will be interesting to see how the offense operates in games when there is not as much of a mismatch.

I'll add one more thing. The playcalling actually made sense. You weren't left scratching your head wondering WTF were they thinking on 90% of the drives. The only playcall I was wondering about was the 3rd down pass to Landry that was short of the first down.

Another thing I liked- and this isn't a criticism of JJ- but when JJ was playing he would account for 7-14 carries. I'm sure this has been mentioned since Saturday, but it was nice to see the talented RBs get plenty of carries (Ware 26, Ford 14).
Its always a struggle to get everyone their share of carries/touches, but Saturday everyone seem involved. Deangelo got his, Randle got a couple, went to Beckham, Ford, Ware, etc.

Great post. Not sure if mentioned yet but both Stud and Krags were in the booth. Neither on the sideline with CLM. Surprised me but it worked. Also, I think LSU ran 70 offensive plays in the game. Very encouraging.

We had 2 backs gain 90+ yards against mostly 8 men in the box.
We lined up in a run formation. They knew we were going to run. I knew. You knew. Everyone knew we were running.
And Ware and Ford toted it, what 38 times for 195 yards combined?

Huge. Big difference versus running about 55 plays or so.
We'll have to throw it better, and I fully expect that to happen. We need to keep in mind that the only experienced pass catchers were Randle and Peterson. Beckham, Boone, Wright, Landry will come around. Their feet are wet now, I expect they'll improve rapidly.

The lack of confusion was so great to see. I atribute this big time to the absence of GC's Chinese fire drill sub packages after every play. It allows for more continuity out there and our guys responded.
Also as mentioned, JJ's carries went to Ware/Ford and our running game was more effective. JL's numbers would have been better without the first half drops as well.
