My grandfather was a coach at LSU in the mid '60s, and my dad was in school at the same time. I sent my dad the video of Les running to the wrong sideline out of the tunnel.

He said there were stories of Cholly Mac getting the team all fired up in the locker room before a game. Everyone would be yelling and jumping and Cholly's ranting and raving, and he turns around to bust through the door to lead them out on the field...and the door is locked.

No, don't see him. He was OL coach from '62-63, a bit earlier than I thought. Dixie White

Nice pic though.

Cholly Mac was a good guy, but for the most part our teams were good to average - never great. Les has a championship and a program as strong as any in the US. Unfortunately, Bear owned him, and our program was not on the same level as 10 others.

I think this is from the Cotton Bowl in '63, but it could be the '66 game. Not sure, but maybe he's one of these guys...

He's the one in the middle with the light colored jacket on. I think my grandmother has this pic hanging on her wall. I have a quilt that all of the coaches received as a memento from this game.

He went on to be head coach at NLU (La. Mo.) after LSU.

Thanks for the pic, this is awesome.

Cholly presided over the greatest era in LSU history until the current era. First, as an assistant during the 58 season and that great 61 season and then thru the 60s and on until the mid-70s. That was a great ball club that had to deal with Bryant and Vaught every year.

Charles McClendon had a great record in his first decade or so but the 70's after 72 or 73 were not kind to him.

He was a class act always!

I went to every Cholly Mac home game from 1960 to when he was forced out and quite a few away games. We were good, some very good, never great - our program was not as good as AL, TN ,GA TX, OK, Neb, SC, OSU, MI, Penn St, ND. We were better than AU, about the same as FL and OM. Cholley was a good man and coach - not a great coach. We are now as good as anybody with talent, depth, and coaching.

The '69 team was great. Could've been his one shot at an NC. I'd say the program was well ahead of FL and Aub at that time. Consistently a Top 15 program.

In a 4 year span (1958 thru 1961) when Coach Mac ran Paul Dietzel's defense (the term "defensive coordinator" wasn't in vogue then, but it's what he was), LSU teams allowed the opposition a whopping 4.57 points per game.

Now I'm sorry, but I don't care what era he coached in - that's fricking tight. The man was a defensive genius.

One thing you always knew with Cholly Mac , is that our defense was going to be good and always used to have a few trick plays up his sleeve waiting for Ole Miss. I remember me and my Dad fussing about him coming back from the Sun Bowl when Charles Alexander, Steve Ensminger and David Woodley was playing when he switched QBS when one or the other had the hot hand. Anyway, Cholly Mac was a true gentleman and never that i know of had any ill words to say about LSU eventhough Im sure he could have. Heres to you Cholly Mac and eventhough I would get upset with you , I always pulled for you and our Tigers and you are sorely missed.

Final AP Rank
1961 - #4
1962 - #7
1963 - NR
1964 - #7
1965 - #8
1966 - NR
1967 - NR
1968 - #19
1969 - #10
1970 - #7
1971 - #11
1972 - #11
1973 - #13

It went downhill from there, but that is a pretty damn solid run. A title was the only thing missing.

My brother played for Cholly Mac. Cholly kept in contact with my brother till he took ill at the end. He would call to check in on his boys, to see how they were doing.

If you look at the name list of the Jack Jaubert painting of Mac and his boys. there are a lot of fine names listed. Any of those players were proud to play hard for him.
