While the "Like" button is nice, I think a dislike button would be more useful, especially if there were a system in place that would automatically impose a couple day ban if you rack up a sufficient number of dislikes in some time interval. You would have to be very careful in setting the parameters of this, but to a large extent the board would start to police itself.

One person would not be sufficient to do that. It would have to be a bunch in a short amount of time, or a whole lot over a longer period of time. I'm not saying that every unpopular post should get you banned, but the posters that do get banned are making a lot of unpopular posts. They could have a low level of automation that tackles the most grievous offenders. I think it would make life a little easier on the admins.
