I'm a sophomore this year and am wondering if it would be reasonable/possible for me to try to do the program? From what I understand, it starts in the Spring. I'm about a semester ahead of schedule. I'm in ECON 2035, ACCT 2101, and ISDS 2000. I'm done with Math, English, and my CMST requirements (after this semester). I took six hours of general chemistry freshman year.

ETA: ECON/FIN major (not sure which one yet).

If it's as hard as it was a decade ago I'd say no. It was a good program but required a lot of work and projects so you needed the time to dedicate to it. It also pulled on knowledge you pick up in all of your businesses classes so it would probably help to have all of your basic business classes out of the way first.

I finished undergrad a year early and did it in the Spring of my 2nd year.

There's no reason as to why a soph can't do it. Completion of the program is more a matter of committment to projects/professionalism and not necessarily coursework, although the more general business knowledge/concepts you're familiar with the more you'll understand how internal controls and the sort fit in with everything.

Are you doing the program to get an internship? If so I'd say you might do better waiting a year. I'm not sure what program size is relative to the # of internships given these days, but I would guess that there is a lot more competition for the choice internships now than in the past... you'd be a sophomore competing against juniors, seniors and grad students. Not saying it's impossible, but something to mull over.

As mentioned by sneakytiger, if you are planning on getting on internship out of the program, i would wait until junior year. Most companies will not want to hire you to intern if they know you have multiple years of school left.

The way the Internal Audit program has its interview process set up is total BS, IMO.

I know it is a well-respected program, but the way they herd companies and students through recruiting is uncalled for.

I will take the other side of this discussion and say go for it. Getting an internship would be great, but even if you don't, being able to put down that you did the program can't do anything but help whenever you go to apply for other internships, especially at that age, given that people aren't expecting you to have any experience yet.

I totally agree. I didn't get my job through "the draft" - and I'm glad that I didn't - because everything seemed to work itself out. But the way they handle the interview process is stupid

I've heard the program is drawing less companies these days. Is it because of the changes in the whole interview process? I also heard companies have to pay now?

What were the changes? I know the "lottery" draft really ticked off a lot of companies. Is that still going on?

Its probably because no one likes doing internal audit and its not a growth industry anymore like it was in the last decade.

really now. Would it still be a good idea to do it though at LSU?

Okay, and would CIA be the best way to start off a career out of LSU for a Finance major? I know you said a lot of people don't like and it isn't the type of growth industry it was in 2005, but it seems like the best way to get started out of LSU Business.

I don't know about internships. I only have a 3.2 right now, but I am in the Honors College and am really gunning for a 4.0 this time. I can finish my sophomore year right around a 3.5 if I can stay on top of everything. If I have something to really work for, that should help me stay motivated with everything.

Is it possible to hold off on a CIA internship until after my junior year, a year after completing the program at LSU? I'm looking at working at Yellowstone next summer. They actually have some small-time accounting related jobs for student workers up there. That could probably add a lot to my resume I guess.

Sorry I'm all over the place here.

If you want to work for a big4 or work in accounting, it will definitely help you get an internship in one of those spots your junior year. If you want to work in finance, its not going to hurt you, especially as a sophomore. Others here can give better advice on the best things to do to go that route, as I took a kind of roundabout way of getting there.

I actually have a friend that just graduated and started an internal audit job with KPMG in Atlanta. What are the pros and cons of working for a Big4 firm if you don't plan on really doing accounting in the long run? If you work in internal audit, is it easy to deviate away from an accounting/auditing type of role and move more in the management direction as you gain experience? I don't really see myself doing accounting or audit work in the long run at all.

What do you want to do when you graduate or are you not sure yet? The CIA program will open a lot of doors for you but from what I have heard, the people that do it just for a line on their resume typically don't make it. The guy that runs the program is apparently kind of an A-hole and the interview process is ridiculous. That being said, if you complete it and do a good internship through the program you will have more opportunities than most when you graduate.

Not sure yet. One long term thing I have been looking at is getting involved in the healthcare industry because it's going to really explode in the next decade or so.

And I wouldn't be doing CIA just for a line on the resume though. I would want to use it to get a good head start in my career and gain a lot of good experience working in that field.
