I am hoping to purchase a new boat in the next one to two years or perhaps sooner if a spectacular deal comes my way and am pretty much set on a catamaran. I have been looking at the Glacier Bay 22, Worldcat 23sf and old sea cat SL5. Just looking for the OB opinion on these type hulls.

I can't remember the type of boat we use to go on but I think it was a 26' sea Kat, took waves good just a slow boat

I fish with a guide in Bay St. Louis who's got a 26 Twin Vee- awesome set up- can run it in the marsh and looks like you could still run offshore with it. Roomy, really stable, nice ride, and the Twin Vees (in that size) go for about $60K- so I think it's a good value also.

I have been spending allot of time on The Hull Truth forum and twin vee seems to get some hate. But I take that with a grain of salt as twin vee is probably the largest manufacturer of catamarans in the states. Has your buddy had any hull issues? Seems that only the older ones had problems.

The one I've been on is fairly old, and he uses it every day- Old Pro Charters, Pappy Kenney....I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you what he thinks, boat looks good to me.

Also met another guy who has the 29' and runs out of Moran's- he fished with us on Pappy's boat and didn't say anything bad about his.

But, you know how that goes- "the mother loves the baby"

From all the research i have done into their sea keeping and fuel economy i am really surprised catamarans aren't more common here in the states. It seems in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa you find far less monohulls. I guess it has something to do with aesthetics.

ETA: If by some chance i hit the powerball soon there will be a Freeman 33 parked in the driveway

don't believe most of what you read on The Hull Truth. They hate on a lot of boats that I know for a fact are great boats--i.e. Contenders & Prolines.

To answer your question though--I've been offshore in a World Cat and Glacier Bay and both were really nice. Most catamarans are slow but usually are powered by smaller twin 4-stroke engines so they are much more fuel effecient. Catamarans usually ride really nice bcause of the pocket of air that is between the pontoons acts as a cushion. I've heard bad stuff about Sea Cats and mixed things about Twin Vees. Can't give my personal opinion cause I haven't been in one myself. (most people that talk trash about other boats on The Hull Truth either work for the company their bragging about or are biased towards the boats they own)

I dive with a guy that has a 26 Twin Vee. My complaint is that there is no ice chest built in and there is really no storage

I have fished on World Cats, Twin Vees, and Glacier Bays. The only thing that bothered me was the speed and the "sneeze", other than that they are great riding boats. Never been on one of these, but it sure looks badass.

Thanks for the input. I am not looking to blast out there at 50 mph. I would much rather a great riding boat with a 25-30 mph cruise and 40mph top end while getting 2-3 mpg.

at least 2-3 mpg. I go offsure in a 31' Cape Horn with twin 300 yammys and it gets around 2 mpg.

They have what looks like at least a 24' catamaran for sale on the way to Dularge/Falgout Canal FYI. Not sure if that's one of the ones you're looking at already though. Also forgot what brand it is, but it's been there for a couple, maybe a few months, now so he'd probably let it go for cheap if he's motivated.

Where is it at? I will be heading down to dularge tomorrow morning to pick up my boss' skeeter from fisherman's retreat. I am really just trying to nail down what I want at this point as I am not in a position to buy right now unless i find something for DIRT cheap that maybe needs some work.

I forgot exactly where, but if you are driving down there it's on the right side of the road. I do know it's a ways passed the middle school. If you are driving all the way down to Falgout, you'll pass it for sure. I want to say it's a Sea-Cat or possibly a Twin-Vee. It Doesn't have a very deep hull compared to some/most of the Glacier Bays and World Cats I've seen.

ETA: Just saw the part about you going to Fisherman's Retreat, lol. You'll definitely pass it.

ETA2: If you're an OT baller, you should get this one LINK

I own a 25 Sportcat catamaran and it has positives and negatives...here they are:

Positives:
1. Nice squishy ride due to super sharp keels that slice through the waves
2. Far less side to side rocking than monohulls since the stability is on the outsides of the boat, not the inside
3. TONS of storage. We have two large fish boxes in each sponson (each of the two hulls are called sponsons), a large forward bow deck box, two good size deck boxes, and a good size anchor locker up front.

Negatives:
1. Slow - our boat has twin 150 Mercury EFI 2 strokes and tops out at about 38 mph and cruises at 1.4 mpg at 27 mph.

2. Fuel economy - Perhaps they are more fuel efficient but it seems like the numbers I see on comparable sized monohulls is much better. I gotta think the cats are heavier than monohulls of similar length.

3. Hard to steer - they are hard to steer in the harbor, hard to trailer, and REALLY hard to keep on a bearing in a following sea. Randomly, in a trailing sea, one of the sponsons will "dig" and significantly slow down so the other half of the boat outpaces it and it turns. It's like the reverse of paddling a canoe.

I liked the cat when we had the boat in Louisiana where we had shorter runs to the fish, but here in TExas where EVERYTHING is 50+ miles, I wish I had a bit more speed. If we go 75 miles out, we spend at least 6 hours travelling, and that really cuts into fishing time on day trips.

Fished on many Glaicer Bays and really don't have any complaints about them.

Fished on a 35' Twin Vee once and it seemed like a nice boat, however I have had several freinds that are guides tell me they don't hold up to the pounding. In fact one loves the layout and is thinking about having the same design made for him out of aluminum.

Have a freind that has a 22' world cat. He does it all with it, fishes the islands, offshore, and even marsh fishes. IMO for an all around boat, that may well be it.
