Good age to take my son hunting?
Posted by Dirt Mover on 8/13/11 at 6:57 pm00
My son turns 4 in November, I want to take him to the deer camp this year. I have 3 good friends that I hunt with and they're all good with kids. We drink, cook and have a good time but nothing crazy. We mainly watch football or sit by the fire. I'm just wondering if 3 or 4 is too young to sit in a stand. Anyone with experience?

He'll probably get bored. I'd wait at least a year or two more.

Took my son last year. He's was four then. We never hunted for more than an hour or two without him falling asleep. The times he didn't crash he whined about wanting to leave. I think it was good to get him started but would've waited in hind sight.

I would wait another year or two. My daughter will be five in Sep. and says she wants to go with me but I dont think it would last very long before she got tired of it and wanted to leave. Most kids attention span just isnt long enough at that age! Just my two sense and happy hunting

I figure that's what would probably happen with him, I've got an iPad that may hold his attention for a while. I guess I'll give it a try and see what happens. It's a good thing that my camp is only 45 minutes from the house.

Took my son at age 5. Make sure you have plenty of snacks. Seeing animals will keep them interested for a while but don't make them stay no longer than they want because they won't want to go back.

The Ipad may work well!

Mine is the same!

It's fine, but I would slip to a food plot or easy access stand around 4:20. That gives you a little over an hour and it's prime time. This is how I got started, and I was 4.

We've got a big community stand on a pipeline that's good for seeing does. Might be a good spot.

+1 on taking them to a shooting house on a green field right before dark.
Where I hunt 95% of the time if you are in the stand for 5 pm you aren't going to miss anything. If my son wants to go one day, (he's way too young now) that is my plan. Go up to the camp, go sit in the stand for 30 minutes or so, then go back to camp, do campfire, games, marshmellows go to bed, wake up hunt until he gets bored and then head home.
That's my plan.

I started going when I was 3. I used to nap on the floor of the stand when I was tired and Dad would wake me up when he saw deer

I didn't start deer hunting til I was 14. My dad had never deer hunted before either, we all have sort of just picked it up as we went. Good stuff.

Things that are a must with young kids deer hunting.
Junk food and drinks.
I big stand were they can crash and lay out.
A sleepingbag if it is cold.
If you are staying at a camp and have others that drink a lot, don't spend the night. If you do, that will show your kid that it is ok to drink. Now if people are drinking just a few not getting loaded, that is different.
If spending the night, make sure you have some food that the kid likes to eat.
Short hunts are a lot better on kids.
Feel free to add to the list.

Four can be a bit young, but I stated mine out at that age as well.He killed his first deer at age 7. Be sure to bring plenty to eat and drink, a coloring book or something to keep him occupied if he gets bored, and try to keep the time in the stand shorter than you normally would hunt by yourself. Also, be sure the bottom of your stand is clean and dry so he can lay down and take a nap if he wants to. During mid-day when you are not hunting, take him for a walk in the woods, teaching him the different trees, look for animal tracks, insects , etc.
Enjoy the time with your child. It will pass too fast!
Thanks for taking a kid in the outdoors. Too many kids only know video games.

Four is a bit young, but you could still take him, although if it were freezing cold then i would not.I took my son at that age, but we only sat for a few hours and came home.Just make a couple short hunts with him until he gets older.

We usually have a night before opening day members only party, doesnt get out of hand though. We'll have another one about mid way through the season. Everybody is pretty serious about hunting. We make it kid friendly when theyre around.
