you guys know to make sure you have as much of this as they will let you buy, right?

it is cheap. it is necessary, and it is the main reason to keep as much insurance on your cars as possible.

i got hit last year by a lady with no insurance, and it came in very handy. some people aren't sure about this aspect of their coverage. please check out your coverage...

My whole family was in a wreck 20 years ago. The driver in the wrong had a 10/20/10 policy and our medical bills where in the 100K range.UM covered all the excess.

Wouldn't your health insurance have covered this as well?

But if your car is totaled your health insurance won't cover your car. Does your insurance cover the whole bill if the other car has limited insurance or does it fall under UM???

If you have collision it will cover your car if you get hit by an uninsured motorist. I don't carry collision though since all of my vehicles are worth less than 15k, basically self insured.

I just have a brain and don't throw money away on a new vehicle every 2-3 years.

In the most recent release the Fed's number on outstanding new car loan balances is almost $27,000. That is frickin' unreal. People continue to live in la la land.

Disability insurance will. My employer pays 100% of my short term disability premium.

Between health insurance and STD and LTD, I don't feel the need to have UM.

No sense in being overinsured.

Or, am I missing something?

So if I my wife and I have collision insurance and health insurance I really don't need UM coverage?

even if you drive clunkers you should have 100/300k coverage, with that amount of UM. if someone crashes into you you have 100k available if you are really messed up. check the annual cost vs the risk.

check around. google. do research. I don't think I am wrong about this

For the most part, this is correct.

Your UM coverage applies to bodily injury. You can be compensated by your own insurer for your loss of enjoyment of life, pain and suffering, etc as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident with an uninsured/undersinsured motorist. Assuming the other person has no insurance or little insurance, your UM coverage is the only way in which you will be compensated for your loss.

Can't I just file a collision claim?

For your property not for your personal injuries

UM is good in cases where you incur major bodily injury, not so much for bumps and bruises, but if you are hospitalized for a length of time, have considerable copays, deductibles, etc, you are off work for an extended period of time etc. It essentially gives you the ability to sue yourself for bodily injury incurred form someone else fault
