Ok, so I have been in the restaurant biz for about 15 years. The vast majority of my career has been in the casual dining business in NOLA. I was a GM of a Mexican restaurant for about five years . I am not going to get specific, but I am now a FOH and bar manager for a very successful Brennan' s restaurant. My long term gf is a doctor and will be applying for a fellowship soon in a couple of cities. Now that I have been with a respected restaurant for about a year, I assume that I should be able to land a job in these towns without having to pull too many strings and favors. Her top choice is Birmingham. I've visited and been underwhelmed with their foodservice industry. Our other options are Charleston SC, Nashville TN, and New Orleans. NOLA is my top priority but my second favorite is Charleston for obvious reasons.

I am looking for any of you that may have experience in managing any places in these cities or live there and have a decency food service background . Her decision needs to be made by early Sept and I've decided to commit to our best option.. I need to know what's good and bad about any of these cities and appreciate any quality insight. It will be a very tough decision and I am hoping to make the right one.

TIA and please offer any serious insight. I really dislike the Crimson Tide!!!!

I'm fairly knowledgeable about the restaurant scene in BHam, but it's hard to answer your question with out knowing what you actually do.

Am I missing something or is it extremely ironic that the replies are coming from Tide?

I noticed that, but I'm experienced with Bham, and thought I could help.

Only thing I know about your industry is that I like to eat. But in the industry of life I know that one must eat in order to stay alive.

1. Charleston: I like shrimp and grits.
2. Nashville: You would end up killing your accountant brah
3. Birmingham: Your best choice for many reasons.
A. It's the place she wants to be and you shouldn't upset a red head.
B. I would imagine there are more black people there, and you have more experience managing them.
C. It's closer to NOLA and you will be driving back a lot for football games, mardi gras, weddings, rib cooking contest, fantasy football drafts.........etc etc
D. Does your career really matter anymore? You're gonna be the next Mr. Mom.

Thats a tough decision. I have heard that Birmingham has had some good restaurants open in the last few years, but you have to realize you are probably going to be looking at making less money than you realize in markets such as that.

I'm biased in thinking that if you want to remain in the industry and your gf is flexible, stay in N.O. and try to work your way into a better GM position or possibly ownerships or part ownership situation.

After managing a few restaurants in New Orleans my old neighbor moved to Birmingham and now manages a Mexican place. Does pretty well.

I am not sure what description you are looking for. I am 30 years old, and have been in the industry for most of my working career. I've done just about every job in restaurants. A majority has been bartending and more recently management.

Nice to see you Mr Wiseass. I went with her to Bham and didn't like it half as much as Charleston. And F being Mr Mom, I gotta get my career together for when she kicks me to the curb.

There are many fine restuarants in Birmingham, but it is not a major city. The man you need to talk to is Frank Stitt. Some might disagree, but he is the hub that the Birmingham food scene revolves around. He might be able to give you the low down. I have some friends working in the back of Ocean and 26 right now. I can ask if they are looking for anyone with your skill set. What kind of salary are you looking for...

One of the greatest places in the world! If I could find a job there that let me afford to live there, I'd be there.

Yeah I think Charleston would be the better place to live, but they ain't no driving in for gameday from there. It's good to go live somewhere else for a few years. Good luck to you guys.

How's Charlie ain't heard much more since they gave his job to that Kutcher guy?
