In about a month, my wife and I will be cutting across the state from the west on I-10 going all the way across and spending some time on the Mississippi Gulf coast. Looking for some places along the way for po-boys, boudin, shrimp, oysters...even greasy arse hamburgers. Not looking for 5 star restaurants here, just some good food. Any help would be appreciated.

How's Steamboat Bill's in Lake Charles? The place always seems packed.

I'd hit Cajun Cafe in Lake Charles instead of Steamboat Bill's. It is more plate lunches though as opposed to deep fried everything.

Steamboat Bills is very good, my go to restaurant for fried fish when I don't do it at the house. New restauant in Sulphur north from exit 20 about 1 mile, been getting rave reviews called Mr Bills, same group by the same name on McNeese in LC if I understood correctly.

Cajun Cafe also very solid just not where I would go for seafood. Also Luna's on Ryan St has very good sandwiches and beer with good variety of both.

Peck's, Speckled T's, and Southside are all pretty good in Slidell.

Are you going through NOLA or taking I-12 from Red Stick?

Some folks don't realize that I-10 dips down through NOLA and I-12 is a much straighter east-west route. Valid question.

It's a fantastic ploy to divert tourism dollars into New Orleans. Obviously the most efficient way to travel East on I-10 is to not take I-10 through the Big Easy.

Also, how is I-12 an interstate if it never leaves Louisiana?

Dunno. But doesn't HI also have "interstate" highways?

Steamboat Bill's in Lake Charles. A little pricey for what you get but the gumbo is awesome! It's literally right off of I-10.

Not sure, but every time I try to drive to a different state from HI, I feel like a golf ball on hole 12 at Augusta...very wet. Nicely played AAT.

Good question about dipping down to N.O. I thought about it but probably going to stay above it for the simple reason that my wife and I have been to New Orleans many times and if we went there, we probably would not make it to Mississippi. Great responses from everyone. Thank you very much.

That's why we just mutter 'innastate'.

There is a gas station at the Sorrento exit (182), just south of I-10 on the right, that has great boudin balls and other assorted goodies.
