It was not as good as all the hype IMo, but it is still a great flick.

The Russian roulette scenes were well done and really tugged on emotions. I don't think it's as good as Full Metal Jacket, but I'd put it above Goodfellas in my list

Don't get me wrong I love Goodfellas

I might be saying this only because I've seen Goodfellas at least 10 times and The Deer Hunter is fresh in my mind after the first viewing

I thought that there were good scenes in this movie, but I didn't like it as a whole. The long wedding scene seems to be a major point of contention, with advocates saying that it works perfectly in contrast with what follows and detractors saying that it just drags on for a ridiculous amount of screen time. I'm in the latter category.

The long wedding scene

It was very long, almost 1/3 of the movie. I tend to agree with you that it was a bit much, but I can see how it adds to the allure of the movie

I had it on while doing some things around the house until all of the wedding and hunting was over.

The only parts I care to watch are the scenes in Nam and the scenes back home afterwards. That's why I didn't really pay attention until that part started up.

I understand character development but deer Hunter is ridiculous with the amount of time they take to let you get to know these guys.

I've tried to make it through the beginning several times. No luck.

The wedding scene reminds me of a Visconti film --you can choose to be bored by it or use it to get to know these people.

It's a film of great performances, the cinematography is aces, but it suffers from terrible pacing, and at the end of the day its thesis is no different from other war films of the time.

i saw it after many hyped it up. however, i wish it was more about the war than his home life.

I thought the wedding scene and the immediate hunting episode just after it were crucial. It intorduced you to the characters and their culture. As a result, the war and its aftermath was even more horrifying.

Saw it for the first time like 2 or 3 years ago. I thought it was a great movie. I'd put it up as one of my favorite 70s movies.

The scene with the 3 bullets is fricking insane.

Surely you mean soot and not raw beef or mutton fat.

This movie had such an impact when it came out because of the backlash and healing from the Vietnam War.

I like Deer Hunter but it certainly is not an action flick by any means. Its a deep character study that goes far down the tracks to let you breath in atmosphere of where these characters are from, how they related to each other and how the war and subsequent return impacted them.

I do believe the wedding was a tad long, but there are some great and subtle performances in this movie. Cazale was outstanding as always in his trademark subtle way. Voigt, Walken at his best and DeNiro before he became the suck.
