My girlfriend and I will be driving from Houston to the Grand Canyon next month to see the country side. I was thinking about getting one of these truck tents for the overnight stops at camp sites. I already have a regular tent, just thought this might be a little easier to deal with and would give her a little more peace of mind for not having to "sleep on the ground where there are bears"

I would also be getting an air matress that fits the truck bed. The tent would also come in handy other times for hunting/fishing and whatnot when there is no campsite.

Just looking for opinions? Anyone have any experience with these?

Don't want to spend the money on one and they're more cumbersome to put on/off. Plus, you don't get near as much headroom clearance as you would with a tent.

My grandpa used to have a couple for when they would make road trips down the coast. Pull up on the beach and avoid the sand everywhere.

yea, they just seem like they'd be pretty convenient. I foresee a lot of situations where they could come in handy, like tailgating when you get there the night before)

Yeah and if the ground is wet or cold, you won't have a problem.

I have a truck tent. It's called a Dodge Megacab. Im 6'5" and can easily lay down on top of back seat platform.

I got one of these for my beach trips. Except I got the single, which me and my girl still fit in. I like these because they have a cot bottom, where as your truck tent still has aluminum rippled bottom and you'd need a blowup mattress or pad. Also the tent cot has a mosquito netting all the way around it, if it gets hot just lift the flaps and tie them up for mosquito-free ventilation. It has a rain fly, and tri-folds. The set up takes literally 5 seconds and can fit in your smallest closet.

Sorry, couldnt resist. The funny thing is with a 6'3" bed I have to lie in the bed at an angle.

When I had a single cab chevy I really wanted a truck tent but I was too broke to buy one.

i've never seen those before...might have to look into one.

The only thing i like about the truck tent is that you're actually in the bed of the truck which would keep her from bitching about being on the ground (hopefully)..she scares easily!

You could probably fit something like that, or a regular rectangular tent in your truck bed.

That's the reason why i got this, so I wouldn't have to be on the ground. What made me decide on the tent cot vs. the truck tent was I wanted easy set up and didn't want to have to blow up a mattress. Really the only thing I do is take it out of my truck, unfold the cot, and the tent thing pops up. Then just throw your pillows in. Bleeding purple might be able to tell you better but I assumed the truck tent took 5-10 minutes of set up time.

I've though about it, but the amount of dirty and nasty shut I throw in my bed, especially on trips when I'd wanna use it, would make it impractical.

They also make air mattresses that fit to your truck bed.
