I just recently joined a hunting club off of Macedonia road near Gloster, MS just south of the Homochitto National Forest. Can anyone tell me about the amount and quality of the deer in that area? Hate joining a place I don't know much about, but I lost my lease and needed to get in somewhere. Thnaks.

Hunted Gloster area a few times on invites. I'd say it's about as good as it gets within an hour of BR.

Good potential. That area holds a good population of deer. If the club manages at all and there aren't a bunch of 'necks around shooting everything they see, then you can have some good deer in that area. I hunted Liberty and Centerville a few years and we had some good bucks around.

i hunt the centreville/liberty area. i have had some luck over the years. not as many deer as it was a few years ago but i think the quality of the bucks have gotten better.

does your lease border the forest?

This is true of our family land. Shiners and neighbors that live by the creed If it's brown, it's down frick up any type of management we try to implement.

It doesnt. But I am about 1 mile south. I have a little boy that I would like to take, and I was just curious if the deer population was high. How many dry hunts would I make to see a deer. The club we joined has 1600 acres, and has been 6 point or better for about 8 years. They say it's nice, but you never really know until you make a season. I was also thinking with the high river this year, alot of deer may have been pushed east towards woodville and gloster. I just want my little guy to see some deer.

You should be able to see some deer if they have been shooting 6pts or better. It is hard to gauge without knowing the lease and the type of land, but that area does hold a good bit of deer if it is hardwoods. If it is just a big pine forest, you may not see as many. Go put some piles of corn out with some cameras. That'll give you a good idea.

you never can tell. i do remember years ago when the doe population exploded you saw deer almost every hunt.

on our little place in centreville, only 50 or so acres, we see enough deer to make kids happy.

It'll have to be a pretty nice 6 pt with the current MS rules.

Like them though, we have a lot more big bucks walking around without meat hunters shooting anything with 4 points.

I hunt in Wilkinson county somewhat near Woodville. You're a little further from the river basin but there should still be some pretty nice deer walking around. Beautiful terrain to hunt too compared to the LA swamps.

Hate to say it but seems like the more La hunters that have moved into SE Miss hunting, the worst the deer numbers have gotten.

If most of them are anything like some of the swamp hunters around here I can't say it surprises me. I have a hard time calling some of these people sportsmen. They will literally shoot any deer they see. It's ridiculous.

Major poaching problems. The closest wildlife office is either Natchez or Hattiesburg and landowners don't want to turn them in for fear of retaliation.
Had 2 10 pts in an area all summer/bow season. Saw them regularly. I get to the camp the day before gun season and the land owner tells me his cousin hit both of them with his truck the night before. We'd hear shots all night most weekends.
We were just past the creek crossing by the horse farm on the left. T McKey was the landowner.

They tell me that used to be a big problem where we're at. I'm sure it still goes on but apparently they've cracked down on it a lot.

I still don't understand the outlaws who will shoot a trophy deer illegally at night. What good is the trophy without the story to tell?
