My previous employer apparently sent me an extra paycheck after I resigned. Someone that works there unofficially let me know this on Friday.

How much should I expect them to take back? Do I have any legal recourse if they want to take more than what I netted? (assuming they want what they paid in benefits back)

You sure it's an 'extra' paycheck on not one for your last time at work?

Many employers delay the initial paycheck by 1 pay period, which means you actually have 2 checks coming the day you resign.

If indeed it was an extra unearned paycheck, they have the right to collect what they paid you.
I have a feeling, like the other poster said, you're just being "caught up" with the held back pay period that most employers use.

My last day of employment was 6/3. I had two weeks of vacation still that they said they would pay me for. I received paychecks on 6/15 and 6/30. What you're saying makes sense though because I'm sure they didn't pay me on my first day of work. They paid me two weeks later.

By said, you mean legally required?

Sounds like you got what you're owed (the withheld pay from your first pay period, plus your vacation time). That said, I'd call the HR department to make sure. That way if there are any issues, you don't have to worry about a collection notice hitting you unexpectedly; plus, IMO, it's the right thing to do.....

Thanks JPB. I'll call them this week and see what's up.

Yes, I am curious about the legal system says I am required to do. I know any opinions I get here are not going to be legal advice. I would rather not burn bridges either, but I've read where they try to take back more than they actually deposited into my account.

Definitely watch for that, but if you talk it over with the HR folks and agree on an amount, I'd say you're good. I definitely agree with not burning any bridges - who knows, someone who worked there may turn into the reference that gets you another job down the road....
