This winter me and my dad are going to costa rica and plan on going fishing. It would be really nice to catch white or blue marlin. Has anyone ever taken a charter out of costa rica, and would you suggest the charter you went on?

My dad, bro-n-law, his dad, and myself went to Tamarindo about a year and a half ago. The trip was bought at a CCA auction and the charter was Go Fish Costa Rica. Captains Peter and Chris are both younger guys from the states who graduated and realized the real world sucks and moved to CR. Great guys and very knowledgable about the water. We went in February and the weather was beautiful. Apparently Jan- March are the best time of the year for sails. Had 2 full days of fishing and caught several sails, mahi, tuna, and dad caught a 550Lb Blue marlin at the end of the first day. I'll be back soon and will defnintiely be with Go Fish CR again.

Hotel where we stayed.

Go to Panama if you can. The Chinesse long liners are not policed off of Costa Rica. They have made a mark on the fishing. Jmo

Fish the Pacific side of the country.....dont line up anything until you get down there...that way you can check out the situation, look at his boat...meet the guide and negotiate the price.....really and truly most people I know from Louisiana fish out of Los Suenos....

I went last year to Quepos(Manuel Antonio) on the Pacific and went with Big Eye Charters.

Had a great time and the captain and crew worked their behinds off to put us on the fish. Whatever you do I would avoid booking through the hotels/resorts as most of them cater to tourists who are satisfied with a boat ride and aren't serious about fishing. I booked through a resort when I was in St. Lucia and was sorely disappointed with the trip. I looked into booking through the resort in Costa Rica and immediately got the same feeling, so I ended up going with Big Eye who was recommended by a business contact of mine.

Not on the fishing charter, but I believe it was one he had recommended as well.

Thats were we went for our honeymoon about 7 yrs ago. Not sure who we fished with, but great guys. Wife caught a big sail, and then got sea sick, so we cut it short. But were both happy. I just wanted her to catch a billfish. I've already caught my sail and blue marlin here out of Venice.

Will be in Los Suenos at the beginning of August. Our guide said they can guarantee plenty of sails and you have a 50/50 shot at a blue...
