I am looking to get into hiking and was wondering what LA had to offer. I want do some day hikes and probably some over night hikes once I get geared up for camping. Are there any good websites/forums anyone knows about for LA hiking? Places to get maps? Good hiking forums in general?
Before anyone gets cute an links to LMGTFY, I already have and have a general knowledge of whats available. I am looking for OBer experiences and recommendations here.

Chicot State Park has some hiking trails and people do camp on them. Not sure how challenging they are and probably not really the experience you're looking for but people who have hiked it say it's beautiful.

Janina Baxley wrote a book "50 Hikes in La", that has a pretty good list, though there are some new ones. There are numerous good spots, Chicot being one of them. I think it's about 22 miles total, in a loop around the lake, with about 5-7 primitive campsites. The Wild Azalea Trail is about 35 miles, near Alexandria, from Woodworth to Valentine Lake. You can do multi-milr dayhikes, or do a thru-hike over a weekend. There are also numerous WMAs with good hiking, like Tunica Hills or Sicily Island Hills. Check out www.hikelouisiana.org for a group that does hikes all over the state, and some out of State.

are you talking about the town that is literally the fork in the road on the way from natchez to rayville? I remember the terrain being pretty flat.

Don't turn towards Rayville. You go straight through Sicily Island a few miles to the hills, which are the end of the Ozark Mountains. There is even a waterfall back there.

There's a reason it's called Sicily ISLAND. SIH WMA is on a large hill in btw the Miss and Ouachita River floodplains. They have a 2 mile loop with 2 waterfalls(mainly run when it rains) and a 7 mile loop thru some impressive woods. Trail not marked real well so be prepared for a 4+ hour hike.

Kincaid Lake has some nice trails.
For a nice first overnighter you should drive to Birmingham and hike the Oak Mountain trails. Really nice elevation change for down here and the primitive camping is real nice.

a few options that aren't in Louisiana, but are great trails...
IMO the Black Creek Wilderness trail is a VERY impressive hike. I can't remember the exact lenth, but I think it took us like 5 days to hike it from start to finish, maybe 50 miles in legnth or so?
Depending upon what part of the state you are in, it's just south of Hattiesburg, near the town of Brooklyn, MS. It follows Black creek and it very nice. At least it was 15 years ago when we hiked it.

More power to you bro! As far as I'm concerned its too damn hot to be hiking! I know a couple trails in central MS and Vicksburg area. Let me know if you are ever in this area.

Thanks for all the help guys. I've got that book on order and will start looking into the trails mentioned here. You say now is to hot, when do you break out the backpack?

I don't I don't remember the last time I went backpacking. Would rather set up camp and hike from there (I'm not built for overnighters backpacking). I will sometimes canoe/kayak down a river and bring equipment to camp along the way, but that's about it (Okatoma is great for this).

So, the backbone trail in kisatchie is about the best I have been to in La. I think it's an 8 mile loop, there are scenic vistas, and clear running streams to get water along the way. (not sure if these are seasonal)
It's the real deal.
Also Kisatchie bayou is sweet. It is misnamed as it is a bona fide creek with sand rocks and clear moving water.
Lastly, if you cross the state line into MS, a place called clark creek natural area in tunica hills area but on on MS side has waterfalls. It's a day use area, unless its status has changed. Probably a 2-3 hr drive from BR.
Wild Azalea trail in kincaid lake area offers long hikes if you are trying to cover a lot of ground.
Hope this helps.

Down here I am a fall/winter time hiker. It's just too hard to hike 7-10 miles in a day and then sleep in 100 heat, I have done it but I prefer not to. Much better to be cold and warm up that hot and not be able to cool off.
Now if I am going to take a trip out west hiking, this is the perfect time of year.

Kisatchie Hills in Natchitoches Parish. Rock outcroppings that make you think you're out west.

As hot as it's been, when I walk to the mailbox, my draws are soaked.. Just thinking about hiking makes me sweaty...
