I always wanted to buy a gun for home defense. Now that I am of age what is the process to buy a assault rifle? Do I need a permit/ go through a course?

Also what about handguns?

Legally, yes.

But judging from your post, I'm going to recommend you do not do this. You seem a little clueless about owning and using firearms. You should learn a little more about them and safety before you just go out an buy one.

The AR's are the "cool" thing to get right now. I have one and it is the only weapon I have that I would really consider getting rid of. Unless you are actually blasting zombies, I really don't get it. That's just my opinion and I tend to have a more "nostalgic" taste in weapons. If it's your "thing", go for it. They can be a lot of fun.

If you're looking for a gun just to get into shooting, it can be cheap to shoot, fun to upgrade, easy to work on, and like I said, "cool". So, on second thought, if you gets you in the game and to the range, get on it! Just start setting aside money every month. This gun shite gets expensive!

Hey, and do us all a favor. When you buy (hell, even if you don't) join the NRA. They keep you up on gun laws and legislature. They can be real extreme whackos sometimes, but the gun grabbers aren't exactly sane, so fight fire with fire. You also get some really good gun insurance with you membership. I've had to use it and there is literally no questions asked.

Me neither. If I bought 10 more guns, I still would not own one.

An AR is as fun to shoot as anything out there but I would not use mine for home defense unless all my shotguns were broke.

To start shooting a .22 is a great and cheap gun to start with. Ammo is cheap and you can shoot for hours on $20...

After you have become more comfortable with guns and have more experience, you will then have a better idea if the types of guns you want to buy. Remember any gun can and will kill, firearm safety is what you need to learn before you get and use a gun.

Harsh crowd on the OB this morning. I understand the gist but a guy has to start somewhere, no?

Plus, he'll be another gun owner which means one less potential anti-gun person.
