What are your thoughts (put aside LSU homerism for a second) about potential dark horses?

I kinda like Florida State.

They've got 17 returning starters. They have EJ "Baby Jamarcus" Manuel, who we badly wanted and would have started for us for like four years now. They have Jermaine Thomas at running back, who we also badly wanted. The defense is led by studs Nigel Bradham and Greg Reid.

They had the #20 scoring defense last year, the #33 scoring offense last year. The team had bad losses to OU and VT, and lost two games they probably should have won to NCST and UNC. They won 10 games after their bowl.

Their quality wins came against Miami, Florida, and South Carolina in the bowl game.

Jimbo has been bringing in monster recruiting classes so you know they are loaded with talent.

Obviously, they have to get past OU, but they get them at home. Other tough games include a road trip to Clemson and Florida in the Swamp.

Good one. I think they will win the Big 10 now that Ohio State has tanked it.

FSU's schedule sets up nicely in that they've got OU at home and the ACC typically sucks. I think 14-0 gets them in the game, but I'm not sure 13-1 does. They'd obviously be behind any 14-0 BCS team and maybe even a 14-0 TCU/Boise and a 13-1 SEC champion, but they'd probably be behind a 13-1 Big 10 and Pac 10 champion, and any 13-1 Big 12 team not named Oklahoma.

And if OU doesn't win the Big 12 that makes their best win of the year look not so great. So basically I think they need to run the table. Which they could. But I doubt. Jimbo has done a nice job, but I think he gets a little too much credit for a 5-loss season last year.

Has Ohio State lost a game yet? I think all this controversy might be something they could easily rally around this season. Especially now that Tressell's out and they have a new, young, hungry coach. I think the effects of all Pryor and Sweater Vest's shenanigans won't be felt for a couple of years at least. Not saying Nebraska won't win, but they didn't dominate the Big 12, no reason to think they're gonna come in and just start dominating the Big 10 either.

Tough road games at Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan.

That Wisconsin game is going to be an absolute battle. I can't wait.

Crazy how replacing Rich Rod and adding Nebraska has completely changed the depth of the Big 10. And Ohio State's future sanctions could likely change the entire power structure. For the better I think. CFB is better when the Big 10 is not a joke.

I am confused. LSU is probably one of the favorites and not a dark horse.

Out of the SEC maybe Florida. I can't see them being considered a favorite with their coaching changes and stuggles last year.

So who are the favorites right now:
Oklahoma
LSU
Bama
Oregon

considering the current dominance of the SEC and the fact that Bama and LSU are favorites, we really can only choose from 10 other teams (3 of those being Vandy, Kentucky and Ole Bear)

I hate to give him credit, but I vividly remember driving down 620 in Austin in the summer of '03 and hearing Chris Landry say LSU could be a darkhorse NC contender, and that their schedule set up to go 11-1 or 12-0.
