Cocodrie Offshore

Looks like we are making a list minute decision to go catch some snapper, mangroves, etc tomorrow. Any suggestions on direction to head? Souteast, south, or southwest? We made a long run last year (1st time out of cocodrie) to the southwest to get into water that wasn't closed to fishing. Which direction is the shortest to find 100 ft of water? I know everything out of here takes a while to drop off, just trying to get the best/cheapest game plan for tomorrow.

Definitely drops quicker to the east. Down side is that those rigs are a closer run from Fourchon and get more pressure. We used to make our way to the ship shoal 170-200 block to start. If fuel and run time aren't a problem there used to be some huge fish in the Ship Shoal 269-300 area along with the Eugine Island rigs the same distance out. Close to a 80-90 mile one way run from the Marina to the Ship Shoal 300 block.

What type of bait do you guys use for mangroves?
Posted on 6/3/11 at 7:52 pm to arowana
Mostly Pogeys for reds and mangroves from what I seen.
Good luck and report back.
I'm out there tomorrow, but not near as far in a 17 footer.

Will do. At the camp making leaders now. We have frozen pogeys, shrimp, and some large live cocahoes for mangroves. Good luck to everyone else tomorrow.

Any update? Have a trip to Cocodrie coming up, thinking about doing one day inshore, one offshore. In the past I usually hit the same rigs I used to fish out of Fourchon-haven't done the Ship Shoal rigs due to distance to deep water, but I hear there are so many snapper, they are being caught a lot closer.

Some friends caught their limit(100) nice specks at Last Isle today.
Said the water was like glass.

If I were going red snapper fishing I would launch further east. But if I was making a trip to the Mardi Gras rig how far south do you have to run to hit mangrove rigs?
FYI to anyone that cares. Caught red snapper in only 50 feet of water just south of grand isle this weekend. They we running below legal size for the most part though!
A dual mangrove and speck trip is more feasible than specks and snapper. Do they have any structure within about 10 miles of the Mardi Gras that has mangroves?

Heading out to Grand Isle this weekend.......any close in platforms where you can pick up a few snapper?
Posted on 6/6/11 at 4:08 pm to TJG210
Close in rigs ALL had red snapper. We stopped at about 7. But almost all of the red snapper we caught where 14-15 inches long. We were really only able to keep the mangroves.
The first rig we stopped at was in about 50 feet of water. Basically first one out of Caminada pass. Went out as far as about 93 feet deep rigs and everyone had undersized snapper.

We caught a ton of huge mangrove snapper 27'' plus in about 85 ft of water directly south of caminada pass. Not too many red snapper though

How much weight were yall using? Carolina Rig?
Posted on 6/6/11 at 4:43 pm to TJG210
Just a hook for some as we chummed them right to the boat. The others were mostly on a carolina rigs. The current wasn't strong and you could catch them only 20 feet down so lots of weight wasn't needed.
We didn't plan on chumming so we ran out of that pretty quick. We had caught about 10000000000 little white trout at the lights on the barge (boat only accessable) that is building the new bridge. Never seen shrimp and white trout so thick... no specks though.
It sounded like popcorn popping out there, it was awesome. I took a little video of it but it doesn't do it justice.
You can see the short video clip here: LINK /

Too bad yall didn't have a cast net available to catch a few of those shrimp.
Posted on 6/6/11 at 4:59 pm to TJG210
Had one but didn't need it. I caught about 100 shrimp in just a few minutes with a dip net. Actually accidentally caught a white trout in the net while dipping up shrimp.
We were catching white trout on bare hooks.
My nephew even tried to use a shrimp to catch a trout with his hands for a couple of minutes but he didn't have any luck.

South tim 151 area mangrove and big reds all day

Whatever you decide to do don't make the mistake of running past rigs to get to deep water without giving them a shot. IMHO you need to target mangroves and chances are you will pick up two red snapper to keep in the process.
Only reason to run deep is if you demand 10 pound plus red snapper.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. We went to south tim 148 area. Right at 100 ft deep. Caught a handful of big mangroves, at least 20 snapper all over 10 lbs (only kept 12). On the way in we crossed a thick grass line and caught about 2 dozen chick dolphin. Had a blast

ST 148 is about 40-45 miles southeast of beach point on west timbalier. Right at 100 foot of water. There were fish on rigs in 50 ft, but they didn't have near the size.
