Here is what I have so far and want advise on possible changes:

Land on Wednesday - Baseball game that night

Thursday - Open

Friday - Possible day trip to Napa (guided tour)

Saturday morning - Guided tour of Muir woods with picnic lunch (this can be changed to Thursday morning)

Sunday - Drive down to Monterrey and fly home on Tuesday.

My question: Should I rent the car on Saturday morning and drive to Napa myself and look at wineries with just my wife and I, spend the night in Napa and then drive to Monterrey on Sunday?
This will give us a day and a half to hit vineyards but will have to drive myself.

I know this is a lot to read.. TIA

You don't need a guided tour of Muir Woods. You can do it by yourself. Save Sat morning for going to the Ferry Building for the farmers market and food vendors

Great oysters and cheese inside

Just came back. Do it yourself. Much better that way, as we did. Skip the big wineries. Make an appointment at Kelham. Go to Envy and find some smaller ones you may enjoy. Rombauer for their Chrdonnay, the fav among locals.

Eat at Redd for sure. Go out to Calistoga (only a few miles) at night and eat Jole and enjoy the bars on Main.

San Fran: go eat at Tadich Grill. Gotta do it if you never have before.

nice choice. see if they have any festivals or shows going on while you're there. and Epsilon in Monterey is one of my favorite restaurants in the country.

FIFY

If you do a search you will find multiple SF and Wine Country threads on this board containing a ton of good info.

I gave him $420 for the day. Picked my wife and I up at 9am and returned us at 6pm. He has access to several wineries without appointments.....and we only paid for 1 tasting (and it was a stop I requested).

He is very close to several staffs.....and it shows. Very knowledgable guy......gave us some history and info as we left San Francisco and did the same in Napa. Will tell you as much as you want to know......I highly recommend this over 1) Driving yourself 2) Taking a corporate tour.

He was highly recommended by a friend in San Francisco, another private tour owner whom was booked, as well as our concierge at the JW.

The restrnts we tried on our last 2 trips (in last 3 weeks) that I would recommend:

Slanted Door
Bobo's
Epic Roasthouse
Waterbar
Fifth Floor
North Beach Restrnt (Italian)
Yank Sing (Dim Sum)

Definately go to REDD in Napa. Duck Confit was amazing....and their tuna tartar was as well.

Slanted Door

definitely

Bobo's

skip

Epic Roasthouse

not a bad place, but expensive for what it is. Kuleto has better restaurants in SF.

Waterbar

see above

Fifth Floor

Yes
quote:

North Beach Restrnt (Italian)

skip. If you want Italian, Perbacco in the FiDi. In NB, Rose Pistola, or L'Osteria del Forno are better options. In the Marina, A16 or Ristobar.

Yes.

Just got back too, check out Alcatraz, Fishermans Wharf, drive to San Jose and see the Whinchester house, do Muir woods on your own, it is cool, just tall trees down a trail(wear a jacket). Walk to Chinatown, check out Union square, ride a trolly car, check out Lombard St.(nothing like you have ever seen...road with the curves.

Just a few things to do, but dam it was cold at night

How many wineries did you see?

That price seems steep.

The Muir woods deal is a private tour that ends with a wine/picnic lunch. Wife wants, wife gets

We will have Thursday afternoon and all day Friday to see San Fran.

Want to do the night tour of Alcatraz.

I did not find it to be steep in the sense....i did not want to taste wine and drive....so that option was out.

I was not interested in taking a napa tpur with a bunch of other people....and be on their timeframe....and get to enjoy a picnic lunch out of a box.

We did 6 wine tastings......(one was bubbly only, so really 5)

If you arent interested in the tastings....get a map and rent a car.

If you arent concerned about going at your own pace....choosing were you go....and want it to be structured for cheap.....there are several "corporate" tours for $80-100/person.

I saw previously that you were not a fan of Bobos....i liked the burrata, bonein filet, and whole crab so much a couple weeks ago....i went back last wed night.

I will admit tho, wife didnt care for the crab....too much garlic......i however, eat garlic to repulsive amounts - and loved the crab.
