WTF?!? Trust me, I am a GREAT tipper. I leave 15% for so-so service. Typically over 20%. But that is my choice to leave it. 18% mandatory is a tax, not a gratuity. frick that. I was planning on meeting a group of 10 tonight to say good-bye to a friend that is moving, but I feel like asking to go somewhere else.

Only thing I hate about it is that once the tip has been determined ahead of time you can generally expect pretty shitty service.

That's the policy at most places for groups of 6 or more. Why were y'all going there anyway?

That "somewhere else" will more than likely add gratuity as well.

Where do you eat? Stella grats my parties of only five or more 20% and I get great service.

Boutin's sucks on many more levels than just an automatic 18% gratuity policy. Believe me.

Ummmm...

Is this really a new concept to you?

Because, like, EVERY restaurant basically does that.

I've never had a problem with service when a gratuity has been added.

Anyone has the option of declining that gratuity or merely reducing it. This isn't a legal contract that's set in stone.

Last time I went to Boutin's it was the WORST service ever. I felt like it was because the server didn't have to worry about the tip. She was terrible. We ended up tipping the host twenty five dollars because she took care of us more than our "server" did. I will NEVER go there again.

I remember that article. The question is, what was the ruling on that court case?

Would depend on the language used. If it is properly worded and the diner is or should be aware of the policy, it's a contract.

The menu may also say "grilled to perfection". Does that mean we can sue if it's not?

So you are saying that if a steak costs $26 on the menu I can tell the restaurant Im going to pay them $16 for it and they have to deal with it?

Regardless of the ruling if you get handcuffed and taken to jail for 16 dollars YOU LOSE!

When places say they "reserve the option" to do this on parties of 6 or more and DON'T do it, I always make it a point to try to see that they get closer to 25% in tip (provided the service was good).

However, if they automatically add the 18% on a party of six, I make it a point not to leave a dime over it.

I just don't like someone assuming I might cheap out on them.
