No Book Board, so I figured this would be the best place to post this. (Spoilers if you haven't read it).

Really liked the book, although I found it a little exhausting during sections of the Battle School and training with Mazer Rackham. I guess it all really beat home the point of how they wanted to push him to his limits, but it was heartbreaking to see the kid's life lived in constant pain and mental turmoil.

Unfortunately, I saw the ending coming a ways out, with him actually commanding the fleets while thinking he was performing another training session. That didn't ruin anything as everything was very well done.

What I want to know is, is it worth it to read the next 3 books, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind? I heard those books are more philosophical and dealing with the children's relationships. Not that that's bad, I'm just curious if they're at all comparable with the first book. Thanks for any insight.

I've never read em, but my fiance says the series is her favorite series books, and she's a pretty avid reader. So I'd imagine that if you liked the first few, you'll like the last few.

I think there is two routes to go actually.

This is one way, or you can go the Ender's Shadow route.

I have read this book 4 times but haven't made the transition to the other novels.

If you want a book that's closer to Enders Game, skip speaker, etc and move on to the Bean saga. Enders Shadow is the first one, it follows what bean and everyone else was doing during Enders Game.

That series is much closer to Enders Game then the 3 sequels which have very little in common style wise with Game

This is what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure if Beans' character would even be close to as interesting as Ender's was. When I pick up the series again, I'll probably go the Shadow route.

Yes. There are also the other books in the Shadow series that are really good. You get to see events unfold from other character's perspective like Bean.

I love Orson Scott Card. He really is one of the best most prolific sci fi writers out there right now. One of my favorite by him is Treason or a Planet called Treason. I've really enjoyed his near future series "Empire" which deals with the Americans 2nd Civil War and America finally becoming an Empire.

Some people believe America is currently in the Republic stage but is on the verge of becoming an Empire if we have an Octavian show up.., That's the premise of this series..

I really liked Speaker for the Dead, but Xenocide was not as good. The Shadow series is excellent, especially the first two.

I love Orson Scott Card. Probably my favorite writer. He's got an interesting political blog going as well.

The Alvin Maker series is a great read, too.

His characters are so very textured and the relationships so wonderfully detailed.

I enjoyed the Ender's Shadow, Shadow of The Hegemon, Shadow Puppets and Shadow of the Giant series more than the Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind.

The sequels are MUCH different. I'm not sure how many I read. I still liked them but they were quite different.

The alternate point of view books should probably be on your reading list first.

Tracing lines on the floor would be less painful.

I laugh at myself every time I think about this book. We read it my sophomore year in class, and I have no idea how I did not see the ending coming.

I guess it was because one he started training with Mazer Rackham I got extremely bored and noticed there was not much left of the book. I knew there were more in the series, so I assumed it had a cliffhanger ending. Then when he realized he actually did fight the buggers...

I've read this 3 or 4 times. One of my favorite books if not my favorite. I've read Ender's Shadow and it was really good. Definitely read it if you enjoyed Ender's Game. Bean is a badass.

The Shadow series is better IMO too. The little street urchin genius is definitely an interesting character and the story is more closely related to Ender's Game than Speaker etc.

just finished Ender's Game and it was great. Got through 2 chapters of Speaker for the Dead and put it away. I'll skip to some of the other books from here
