Residents must be out of area by 5 p.m. Sunday via The Daily Advertiser

quote:

Menard said the evacuation will be issued to all residents living within the Atchafalaya Basin south of Highway 190, including the Three Mile Lake area, North Wilderness Road area and the east side of the River Levee.

The mandatory evacuation, however, excludes those residents living within the ring levee of Krotz Springs and Melville.

quote:

A voluntary evacuation is underway for all other residents living in the Atchafalaya Basin north of Highway 190. Officials said the voluntary evacuation affects all areas within the Basin levees, which does not include Port Barre.

"Mandatory evacuation" doesn't mean you HAVE to leave; rather, they won't come back for you", right??

The Parish President told me that residents "must be out" of those areas by 5 p.m. Sunday. That's as far as I know right now.

It means get the hell out or stay at your own risk. In other words, its the ability to say "we told you so" and limit liability.

But yes, if a civilian is in trouble and the "authorities" have to come get you, they will, unless it would put the rescuer in imminent danger.

I love when news organizations publish these kinds of reports without any corresponding maps...

Yeah well they say that cause, like them saying they won't come back for you, they do.

Saves them hassle, understandably and honestly, when there is a mand evac any idiot staying should be "left", barring any extenuating circumstances.

We've just been trying to get the information out as quickly as it comes to us. We've posted such maps elsewhere on our site, which is why one wasn't attached to the story I linked. I'll talk with our online department and try to get one added asap. I think that's a good point.

The St Landry Parish evacuation orders concern me.The parish president is running for state representative and he is getting a lot of free air time and press. Parishes that are way more in danger are very quiet.People that saw no water even close to their homes in 1973 are being forced out.I dont trust politicians.

I am not saying they will or will not see water, I just wanted to comment on this statement. I keep hearing things like this from people and it concerns me. Do you realize how much has changed due to development, drainage work and many other factors? Just because you saw no water in 73 does not mean you would be as lucky now. Yes I realize this flood may turn out to be much less severe, but things have changed drastically since then.

I agree totally about things within a couple of feet elevation.5-6Ft in the basin is another story. If the water crests at 27-29 feet at Butte La Rose if wont back up and flood areas at 35ft elevation 25 miles to the north. Already as of 11 this morning the mandatory evacuation has changed to no roads closed and no power will be turned off.
