Proper disposal of my weathered and torn 10y/o American flag?

I have had a 3x5 flag hanging under my patio for 10 years that just recently started tearing pretty bad. It is also faded out.

My wife bought me a new one that I put up in the old ones place. I have folded the other one up and put it in my shed, not knowing what the proper way to dispose of it is.

What do I do with the old one?

Are you trying to get someone to tell you you are supposed to burn it?

Fold it up and store it away. Maybe one day we will have more than 50 stars on the flag

The only definitive answer is found in the US Flag Code. TITLE 4 > CHAPTER 1 > Sec. 8(k). It states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning"

Think you cut the blue field away from the stripes, cry a little, then bury.

You can call up the Flag Keepers. They seem pretty into this kind of thing. Link to their site:

I've actually thought about burying it at my FIL's gravesite since it was a gift from him. He was a decorated veteran with tours in Korea and Vietnam. But he's buried in Port Hudson and I don't think they would appreciate me digging into their ground.

American Legion, Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts all typically take flags in need of disposal.

I had the honor of doing many flag retirement ceremonies while Cubmaster a few years back.

We disposed by burning, but first, separated the field and the stripes, burned the white, then the red, then the blue, all while taps played softly.

When I did a flag retirement ceremony, if there was a dry eye in the house after it was over, I felt like I hadn't done my job.

You burn it, but in an honorable way.

My dad has kept flags from his whole lifetime. I think he has about 8 or 9 now. Pretty cool collection. And like one poster said if there is ever more stars added, an old 50 star flag would be sweet to own.

I remember in boy scouts at our regional camp out they retired an old flag.

It was a ceromony. I remember them cutting slits in certain spots and burning it..this was years ago.
