turning left on a green light, no arrow...who goes first?

say you're at waiting at an intersection, to turn left. you have a green light, no green arrow. you're waiting for a break in the cars so you can go. you pull up, past the line, in the middle of the intersection. the green light you are looking at turns to red. so you are in the middle of the intersection, looking at a red light. do you get to go first, and make your left turn before anyone else in the intersection goes? even if they have a green light and you're still looking at a red one?

I guess you, since you're running the red light

thats what i told my dad. but he insists the person in the middle of the intersection has the right of way. we almost got into a fight in the car yesterday bc he kept yelling at me to "pull up so that when it turns red we can go". just didn't make any sense to me.

says he learned it in drivers ed 40 years ago and its a real traffic law.

i know, right?

i asked him wtf the line was for and he says "so you know where to stop when the light is red".

If you're blocking traffic by not moving, you might as well go. You're already in violation if you're in the intersection when the light turns red.

The line is there so you always know where to stop (even at a green light).

Just as if the street was backed up ahead of you. If you cannot make it across the intersection, you stop at the line so you don't block the intersection.

What would prevent 2-3 cars behind you from crowding into the intersection and turning after the red light? I hope you do the driving in your family.

i asked him the same question and he said ALL the cars in the intersection in front of the line are allowed to go first.

the older he gets the angrier and more anxious he is. plus he's an engineer so he already thinks he knows everything.

no you should sit there in the middle of the intersection and block traffic until the light turns green and make all the other cars drive around you.

Dad's right. Green light means proceed through intersection yeilding to any traffic already in the intersection...and yes people take advantage of this.

if you are in the intersection when you're light turns red, you are running the light. even if only the back 1 foot of your vehicle is in the intersection when the light turns red, then you are running the light. you're father is wrong.

I did this a few years ago, except when my light turned red and I started to turn left, the oncoming traffic was not slowing down...they still had the green light and left green arrow - i got a lot of "number 1" signs thrown at me for that move.

Don't proceed into the intersection until it's clear - plain and simple.

Congratulations on the dumbest thread ever

Sitting in the middle is illegal on a red light. The line is there as a point of reference of where to sit until u can go.

Sitting in the middle is just aggressive driving. It should only be done by aggressive drivers who know what they are doing.

This is pretty common practice in Ohio...

If you're at a busy intersection with no turn arrow, you won't turn for an hour if you don't do this.

re: turning left on a green light, no arrow...who goes first?
why did you wait until it turned red? I always roll up to wait for a break in traffic but if it starts turning yellow I wait for the oncoming traffic to stop at tue light (or start to slow down) and I turn left.

ask him to show you the law. Argument solved. Also, who says his driver's ed teacher knew what he was talking about? They aren't known for being the smartest people in the world.

Who says that the oncoming traffic's light turns red when your light does? That often isn't the case and then you would be left out in the middle of the intersection for quite some time while you were caught running your red light.
