One of my favorite rules in the book:
Batter hits a line drive 10 ft over the shortstop but the shortstop throws his glove up and knocks the ball down. What is the ruling?

dead ball,, batter awarded second

Base hit. Probably an extra base, too. Not sure on that part.
But you can't do that shite.

it's third base. Batter goes straight to third.
ETA: this even happened in the majors a few years back. Someone (pitcher I think) threw his glove up (which I believe is enough, you don't have to hit the ball) as a reflex and the play was blown dead, batter to third. Even the announcers were like "everyone knows not to do that since little league!" I never learned that in little league though..

Correct - batter is awarded a triple
Posted on 5/2/11 at 3:05 pm to golftigers
The rare automatic triple. If the outfielder does it, it's a home run within the ump's discretion.

FED rule w/ detached player equipment is a 3 base award and pretty sure immediate dead ball

U ump HS in mandeville? think that was on the NFHS test this year

to be honest I was 50/50 but wanted to be first

Only reason I know is it happened in a little league game when I was younger. There was a 10 minute discussion with the umpires to figure out what to do. Only time I have ever seen it

Haven't done baseball in a while. Used to but that was before kids playing travel soccer and baseball.

yeah that pretty much kills any time for umping.. he play USSSA?
we had a question on the FED test this year involving a catcher touching a foul ball w/ his mask, but same base award applies

Yes. Right now soccer and baseball overlapping (6 days a week total). Soccer finals in two weeks and baseball tournaments 3 of 4 weekends next 3 months.

Same shite happens if an fielder catches a fly ball with his hat. The batter is awarded 3rd base
Posted on 5/2/11 at 3:52 pm to golftigers
why such a penalty for that when you can throw the glove with the ball in it to a base to get a runner out
Posted on 5/2/11 at 4:49 pm to SouljaBreauxTellEm
cause you threw the ball with the glove on it, not the glove with ball in it

I laughed my saban off last year at cypress -
runner at 2b...
strike 3 kid swings and misses at it ball hits him in leg ball goes rolling into fould territory near 3b..
guy calling pitches picks up ball throws it to pitcher - runner at 2nd is now at third and batter is at first -
took umpire 30 minutes to get it right...
strike 3 batter is OUT - dead ball runner at 2b cannot advance.
