question about 1911's

I am starting to look for my next pistol and I am pretty sure it is going to be a 1911. I know that Taurus makes one that is cheaper than some of the others, but is there a real difference? Also, I have seen some in a 9mm is that caliber frowned upon in the 1911 world? I am not against the .45 just want to look at all of my options.

They make 1911 in 38...9mm and 45...and 10mm if I was going to get a 1911 and not be in 45 caliber I would buy a 10mm. Not all 1911 are created equal but they all pretty much run and function the same. I would look at the Springfield 1911 in that same price range.

Just shot a Taurus 9mm 1911. Its nice but get the .45. Sacrilegious not to :)

To add to texastiger they are also made in .40...anyway....there are differences from manufacturer to manufacturer. If you are new to the 1911 market and havent had extensive range time with a few different models you probably will have a difficult time discerning the nuances that make them different. Basically the higher end 1911's have better fit and finish. Stay with the biggest names and get one with the features you want because 1911's are so customizeable you will want to start changing things and while fun to do it will end up costing you more in the long run to piece one together. Who cares what anyone else thinks, I've had like 5 or 6 1911's and the only one I would take back would be the 9mm sti trojan. The others were nice, the 9mm was just 1000x more fun.

I'm a purist, so I think 1911's should only be in .45 but that's just me.
Taurus is a good cheaper alternative if you're on a tight budget but just know you get what you pay for. Also, Taurus is Brazilian so you won't get any American parts with it. America doesn't do too many things well anymore, but one thing it can still do better than anyone is make 1911's.
I own a Springfield and I'll likely buy a Kimber soon.

I have a Para and love have never had a problem with it. They are pretty reasonable as far as price.

If you are tight on price, a lot of people I know who have them really like the Rock Island 1911s.

Boglehead you should have stayed a lurker...trust me the people on the board no plenty about just about any weapon that gets asked about. I won't knock your dan Wesson because I agree with your thoughts on it. But when a guy comes on the board and talks about getting into shooting and buying a 1911 and he is asking about a Taurus no one is going to tell him to go buy a dan Wesson or any other custom pistol. We are going to offer options in that same range. You could have worded your response better than saying the people on this board don't know shite about 1911's. I have seen many people pull out there customized guns they had a lot of money in and get out shot by shooters with average grade guns.

Used to be the best value, then they skyrocketed prices. Just check out the Valor, used to be sub $1000 and now is like $1600.
If Im spending 1600 I might as well spend 2000 and get a used Les Baer, Nigthhawk, Wilson, etc.

The point you can get a good weapon for half the price and shoot just as good. If he is going to start shooting a ton and shooting completions then I would say buy a weapon like a Wesson but for someone who is going to shoot less than 500-1000 rounds a year he can save a lot of money to buy some ammo to go out and have fun with his weapon. And you prove my point when you addressed the OP as a fool.

And I guess I should edit my statement, since I can get used customs for $1500.
And FWIW, I have owned Kimber, Springfield, and STI 1911s. Ive handled several different customs.
I will still stand by the STI Trojan right now being the best gun for the money, available in all sorts of calibers for right at $1000.

I got my two, a 4 1/4" Commander model by American Classic and a 3 1/2" Concealed Carry Model by Citadel, for easily less than $500 out the door. I ordered them from www.galleryofguns.com. I've seen some RIA's or Citadel's at some of the Academy's.In this same price range I'd include Rock Island Armory, Citadel, Firestorm, American Classic and ATI. The next price range up would be the $600-800 range. Things start getting really expensive beyond that. Taurus will be in the next price range up from the models I have.
For my first 1911, I didn't want to spend a whole lot since I wasn't sure I'd like the 1911 enough to justify a more expensive one. There are two large manufacturers in the Philippines making a number of quality, entry level 1911's (Rock Island Armory, Citadel, American Classic, ATI and Firestorm). These guns are well-repected on the 1911 forums on the 'net. My Commander only cost $450 and came w/ Novak style sights, beavertail safety, extended slide release/safety and combat trigger/hammer. 400 rounds later I'm still very pleased. The Citadel has been very pleasing, as well. In addition, the 1911 is nice and slim for concealed carry. In fact, my two are now my main guns for cc.
There are a lot of very nice higher priced 1911's out there (Kimber, Colt, STI, Springfield, etc), but there are now some good options if one doesn't want to break the bank.
As far as choice of caliber for a 1911, there's nothing wrong w/ a caliber other than the 45 acp. The 1911 was designed for the 45 acp; from what I've read, non45 acp 1911's may not run as well. As far as the 9 mm, the 1911 frame is kinda big for a 9 mm, unless one gets a 1911 designed specifically for the 9 mm, like the Springfield EMP.

I bought myself a Kimber Custom II with adjustable night sights last year for Christmas. Paid out the arse for it, but love it more and more everyday.
