I was just looking on google maps for a place to put in on the amite near old perkins and stumbled across Spanish Lake. I've lived in B.R nearly all my life and have never heard of this place. has anyone ever been out there and if so hows the fishing?

It is no longer a lake. Two years ago the Iberville Parish Government removed the locks that kept water in it. Now it is just a mudhole.

There used to be good fishing around it for bream and sacs, and okay fishing for bass. Duck hunting was also pretty good at it.

It was awesome, right near by, and had one of the best swamp tours around. All gone. It's a damn shame.

Yeah it sucks. I live right there and made several evening trips there just a few years ago. Made quite a few duck hunts back there as well.

Used to could put in off of HWY 74 in Braud Bayou and run to the lake. I've caught plenty of sacs, bream, and bass in that stretch.

Sucks any time a waterway is let go.

Yep. I understand both sides of the argument, but millions of fish were killed and hundreds of alligators lost their habitat. I imagine most of them died too.

If they would have left it in its natural state there wouldn't be a problem, but when the flood gates were first installed the lake silted up. Now when they open the gates the lake doesn't hold water.

I wish WLF, Corps of Engineers, or some environmental group would go in and dredge the lake out to where it would hold water all the time.

You guys aren't talking about Spanish Lake between New Iberia and St Martinville?

How did you miss that huge battle that was going on over it about a year ago? It was on the news/newspaper a few times week for a while

ebr didn't have shite to do with this...

and.. had they lowered the water and not kept one certain landowner's property flooded... there might still be water..

but all they did was right a previous wrong... water should never have been held in their all the time anyway.. hence - the flood gate(not lock) that was kept closed.

swamps like that are south la's catch basins.. not meant to hold water permanently.

Yep. The introduction of the locks caused the lake to silt up. If they would have left it in its natural state it would hold water year round and still be a good fishery/duck impoundment.

EBR most certainly did... When they were trying to work out a solution EBR was asked for assistance for something on our side and they said they weren't interested.

whatever happened decades ago happened but because of that it turned into a huge wildlife habitat. things change and "righting a wrong" by just reversing what was done isn't always the right thing to do.

that landowners property was "flooded" when he acquired it no?

that being said, i agree, the floodgates should have never been installed.

Any chance you can identify this certain landowner? I'm really just curious...

No that landowner knows me personally

And what exactly was ebb asked to do?

It was already wildlife habitat before it was flooded

So should the entire atchafalaya basin be flooded levee to levee?
