Will he ask for more money than expected as he continues to show improvements against quality apponents?

It seems he has really stepped his game up since West's injury forced him onto the court. Somebody out there will be willing to overpay for a 7'0" who can defend bigs and showed quality flashes of play. Bigs are always overpaid.

He catches everything fed to him in the post which is HUGE for a big man. Just last night Oak dropped a sure two points off a pass and of course Gasol drops that pass from Kobe at the end of the game to pretty much seal it. Big men who actually play big, are in high demand.

not sure if it would actually be overpaying. I think he is very valuable and deserves more playing time. My hope is that this team can resign West, Landry, and Gray and turn Marcus Banks + David Andersen into a quality 2. If they can do that I think this team has few weaknesses and would be a legit contender. Any team wanting to contend nowadays needs size and Aaron Gray is the only one who brings that to the table for the hornets. Gotta resign him.

Bank's contract is expiring and there's a team option on Andersen for next year which I can't see the Hornets picking up so therefore use their combined payroll coming off the books to get a decent 2 via free agency.

between the 2 of them 7.25 million will be coming off the books which isn't chump change.

I think he means "let him walk, clearing up about $2.7 million tied up in a team option on the cap".

Current contract situations:

Signed: CP3 ($16.4m), Oak ($12.5m), Ariza ($6.8m), Jack ($5.2m), QPon ($1.1m)
Player option: West ($7.5m), Gray ($1.1m)
Team option: Andersen ($2.7m)
Qualifying offer: Marco ($3.3m), Smith ($3.1m)
Expired contract: Banks, Green, Landry, Mbenga, Ewing Jr.

Total payroll commitments between various options: $50.7m

Declining Andersen's option and refusing to tender Marco will clear up about $6 million, which is MLE-range money which may get us a good 2.

The LA Lumberers are his best match up so I think some of you are overrating him a bit. As to what his worth is, Lou Amundson was probably one of the better backup bigs to get a deal this offseason and it was in the low $2 million range. The Knicks signed Mozgov from overseas for the high $2 million range, so if Gray opts out I think he'd get in the $2 - $3 million range. Gray has improved a lot thanks to this coaching staff and he's starting to earn Monty's trust. No need to risk winning over a new coach when you can probably get a market value raise and sure minutes in NOLA.

I just remember all the pre trade deadline talk of the need to find a capable backup center and feel that Gray has steped up to fill that void. I'd hate to see him leave and the team take a step backwards creating another hole. This team is a starting 2 and an owner away from being a legit contender. So close....

I trust Demps though. He has done a solid enough job shedding the burdensome contracts and got us into this favorable position.

His conditioning has been pretty impressive this series, as well. He is running the floor fairly well for a man his size.

I say pay the man.

He's been borderline dominant (in everything but ppg) down the stretch this season for a backup.
