Is the months of May and June good times to go? A couple of friend and I are looking into this. If these are not good months, what are good months and do any of you guys suggest a guide?

Tried to go out of Pirates Cove out this past Thurs, Fri and/or Sat. Winds from South, West, then East @ over 20mph all 3 days. 5 to 7's. Heard good catching reports the week before in calm sees 70 miles out near the rigs. May and June are much better months cause the cool fronts stop coming this far south.

Go with a guide or someone in the know the first time you go, learn the ropes and then your set!

If you consider Venice, I highly recommend Capt James Peters, Osprey Charters

Out of Venice would be my first pick. A lot shorter runs to the tuna in the months you want to go.

Eddie Burger is one of the top charter boat captains in Venice.

I stayed in the Cajun Lodge back in May '05 when I fished with Steve Schook (sp?). Nice place. I'd like to get a trip back down there soon, but with a baby coming in a few weeks, it's not happening this year. Maybe next spring/summer.

He has been so busy with his hotel and marina he doesn't run his boat as often as he used to, but he told me at the CCA seminar last week he intended to fish more this summer. His captain that took us out when he was tied up was a good fisherman and I would fish with him again (name escapes me).

Try Fish Commander charters with Lance Walker or Reel Addiction charters with Ryan Dicharry. Both good guys out of Fourchon whom I've fished with my whole life. They know their stuff.

Was his name Chad?

If you don't choose to go with Moran, then choose Tuna Time with Ed Frekey

Chad sounds right. When were you deckhanding?

Have heard good things about Ed as well.

I haven't deckhanded on a charter boat in a few years now, but my friends either run the charters or are deckhands for those operations.

We went on a 24 hour tuna trip last summer with Ed. fricking blast. We hit the black tuna so hard, we had to throw them out to start making room for the yellowfin starting at dawn. We had more tuna meat than we could handle coming back.

Great trip

tuna are more predictable with cooler water temps in spring/fall. It's hit or miss during the summer as water temps rise during the day, the tuna stay deep where the water is cooler and are less active.Your best bet during the summer is to book an overnighter. pretty much guaranteed to get on a bite at sundown and daybreak. I went on one last year in late July out of Fourchon and had 8 YF, 20+ BF and 4 cobia. Ive also been on a daytrip in june and been skunked. your best bet is to find the guide you want to go with and keep in touch with him and check fishing reports regularly - when the bite gets hot, jump on a boat and head south
