Nothing wrong with Thompson's. Once a year and the deck will look new for many years.

There are a lot of good products out there, the key is preperation. Make sure the deck is clean, dry(depending on the product you're using) and free from any flaking or debris.

Are you putting it over stain I assume? PPG makes a really good deck sealer.

Just used this myself:

Deckscapes.

I had used the Thompson's semi-transparent stains twice before, but the solid colors last longer. If you don't mind not being able to see the wood grains anymore and your deck gets full sun I would recommend a solid color stain. Got the above at 40% off too. Sherwin-Williams stores often run specials like this, but you have to ask about them.

Every year? Really?

I've got a set of stairs in the back yard that I WOULD ABSOLUTELY HATE to have to seal every year.

If your use Thompson's then yes. That is why I went with a darker tinted Behr product. It was top rated in a consumer test I saw; Thompson's did not fare so well but none of the clear sealers work as well as the tinted ones. Even with Behr I do it every other year. We have 2 decks that are over 1,000 ft2 total and I love them but it is a lot of work too.

The reason why I switched to the solid color deckscapes. 3-5 years in heavy traffic areas.

ETA: Sun exposure being the difference in the 3 to 5 year number.

I did a lot of reseach and ended up using this on a new wharf earlier this year. The stuff is a bit pricey but I was willing to gamble for the 7 year guarantee. Application was easy. Excellent coverage. Still early, but so far, I am satisfied.
