The 31 Division I coaches voting in the poll are not obligated to vote for the NCAA tournament champion as No. 1 on the final ballot of the season.

Ohio State received the other #1 vote. Even with the NCAA tournament in basketball, you can't get a unanimous champion.

You wouldn't get a unanimous champion in football if the contract didn't mandate that people vote for the winner of the BCS game...

Eh, the polls really don't matter since the NCAA officially awards a National Champion trophy for basketball.

The thing I found more comical was VCU making Final 4 then being ranked 6 in Final Poll.

and coaches still don't vote 100% within that contract.

That's my point: it doesn't matter the system, someone will always find a reason not to vote the champion #1....whether that be football or basketball.

The only thing that matters is who brings home the hardware. By the way, didn't Miami receive some first-place votes in the final poll the year Warren Morris hit his home run?

The AP votes a unanimous champion some of the time.

Why? Unless they played the 5 teams ahead of them there is no way to prove that they are better then a team that didn't make the Final Four. Its all part of the reason SFP calls it a terrible way to determine a champion because it rarely pits the best teams against each other to prove worth.

even with that you don't get a unanimous champion.

I have no problem with 1 vote going to Ohio State. UConn was not the best team in CBB, they were just hot at the end. They won the tourney and get the spoils that go with that, but that doesn't make them the best team. Rubber stamping the winner of the tourney is pointless.

Yesterday I was honestly thinking about what would happen if an undefeated team that blew out everybody all season was beaten by an 11 seed or something like that in the title game on a buzzer beater.. and coaches still voted them #1, something close like 16 votes to 15.

So it's funny another team got a 1st place vote in the final poll. I don't remember the last time that happened.

UConn was the best tourny team though, and better than most give them credit for. They were 21-0 out of conference, and were 14-0 in "tournament" settings. Using UConn is not the best argument for Slo against playoffs, IMO. I do generally agree that tournaments produce champions and do not identify the best teams necessarily.

excluding the NCAA's how many good teams did they play OOC? UK and Mich State looks about it.

I don't care about the OOC vs Conf, they were not the best team for the entire season, just the end arguably.

Its not playoffs, it the size of the playoff. The more teams, the more likely you get a fluke winner. I don't think one format is better than another at preventing accidental champs. UConn is not on the level of Villanova or 88 Kansas, but they were not one of the top 4-5 teams all year either.
