find where they're traveling to roost and set up and wait to ambush

Are you hunting easterns? They are not easy to pattern. Ive only known one old man who had a call similar to a kee kee run that he swore by but I have never seen it in the field. Other than that, if you are hunting the afternoon, set up where you have seen turkeys roost before and hope to get lucky. If you are talking about before 2 pm, that is the best time to kill them

this seems to be the general feeling, set up and start calling?

Sucks unless there is an approaching thunderstorm. That's the only time I'll go in the afternoon. They shock gobble to thunder and respond to aggressive cutting.

I've killed one of my biggest turkeys in the afternoon. I left him that morning gobbling and set up on him and the hens where they were going to roost. He was gobbling his arse off by the way.

I killed one saturday at 3 pm and how I hunt them in the afternoon is I use a gobble tube to get a shock gobble and once I've located them by getting a shock gobble I try to call to them with a hen call if they don't respond I use the gobble tube or a crow call again to get a shock gobble and then I try to spot and stalk, i have been successfull using this method. the only down side to using this method is the shots are usually long and the bird often sees me before I see him, but when they are not responding to hen calls its tough anyways.

I'd really discourage anyone from using this strategy unless you're certain you are alone on the property. Using a gobble tube is an excellent way to get shot...

Very true, didnt take into consideration folks hunting public property, I am one of the lucky guys to have 1500 acres and only 2 other guys turkey hunt it with me, if you are certain that no one else is around and that you won't get shot then I would recommend trying it.

Using a gobble tube

I've never tried this method in the afternoon. I usually do what I posted in the above post. The gobble tube would make it easier since it is so hard to pinpoint the bird in the afternoon.
