Current Overrated and Underrated Fighters

this changes from month to month. Not long ago Jon Jones would be the runaway pick for most underrated fighter in the world, now some might argue that he's overrated

Even though they're champs, I think Frankie Edgar and even Jose Aldo are both somewhat underrated (neither receive the publicity they deserve, imo). I also think Jake Shields, Matt Hammil, and Jon Fitch all fly way underneath the radar as well. hmmmm, they're all wrestlers.....I guess it's cause many consider them boring fighters.

Who else would yall consider underrated? I know there are a bunch of young up-and-comers rising through the ranks right now....I'm curious what others think.

As far as overrated fighters go, Brock is the first that comes to mind (even though he has now been exposed). I still consider him hugely overrated b/c of all the hype and attention he still receives. He's a huge cash cow for the UFC though, so I kinda understand. I'll probably catch crap for this, but Overeem is the most overrated champ imo. Dude has been Ko'ed a whole bunch, but he hasn't lost in mma since 2007. I really want to see him and Cain fight for a unified belt.

And boxing guys chime in. I haven't followed the sport lately, but I'd like to hear some names thrown out there.

re: Current Overrated and Underrated Fighters

First off, I agree with you completely about Overeem. I think he would be in a world of trouble against some of the top UFC guys with good wrestling.

I don't think Hammil is that underrated, he did not look good against a pitiful Tito. Wouldn't shock me if he gets ko'd by Rampage.

Shields is really more of a jiu jitsu guy but definitely underrated.

Fitch is an interesting case, he just pulled out of his rematch with BJ so we will have to wait awhile to see him again.

You are right on about Jose Aldo, he is incredible with Jon Jones/Anderson Silva level talent, his only problem is that he fights in a lower weight class that doesn't get the same amount of attention.

wouldn't shock me either. Hamill isn't a well-rounded fighter, but the dude is tough as nails and has no quit. He'll probably never be LHW champ, but I say he's underrated cause of his body of work. Dude has beat everybody put in front of him, and his only loss was 3 years ago against a very talented Rich Franklin. Bisping loss doesn't count in my book and the Jones fight might as well never happened. Speaking of Rampage, I was looking over his record the other day and for some reason, cannot remember his last fight with Lyoto. I don't know what it is, but for the life of me, I cannot remember these two fighting at all last year.....thought it was a typo on his wiki page at first

Huh? Jones BEAT THE shite out of him. The illegal elbow had no effect on that fight at all. That was an absolute beat down.

Everything except for the decision was forgettable to be honest. Rampage won the first two rounds, albeit not by much. Lyoto turned it on in the third and almost finished the fight, but Rampage won the decision. Most people still felt like Lyoto deserved the decision, Rampage was even visibly shocked when they made the announcement.

I understand what you are saying about Hammill, I just haven't been impressed with him in his last few fights, and like JJ27 said, he was absolutely destroyed in the Jones fight.

And you are absolutely right about the Bisping fight. I saw it again on UFC Unleashed the other day and I still can't understand how you could possibly give a decision to Bisping. I guess it's good to fight in England when you are a native.

re: Current Overrated and Underrated Fighters

that's why I said it might as well never have happened. It's a "W" on Hamill's record and an "L" on Jones', but I don't consider that a victory for Hamill or a defeat for Jones. Just a shitty outcome for a fight that basically didn't exist. I know that's a shitty philosophy, but that's how I feel. Hate fights that end like that, but you can't just say that Jones would've won just b/c he was soundly beating Hamill. So IM(shitty)O, that fight never really happened, shouldn't go on anybody's record, and Hamill only has 1 loss b/c that Bisping decision was complete bull shite. 1 loss Hamill in 6 years of fighting = underrated in my book.

That all sounds familiar, but I still cannot even vaguely remember that fight at all. I must've been wasted that night or something cause I'm just drawing a huge blank. I don't even remember them being scheduled to fight, the build-up to the fight, or anything. Must be getting old?

I don't know what to think about Carwin. He's strong and hits hard, but I still don't know what happened to him in the Lesnar fight (think it was more than just cardio). He's still an unknown in my book and has much to prove. His fight coming up this summer against the huge Norweigen BJJ dude should be a nice test.

re: Current Overrated and Underrated Fighters

Definitely agree with Edgar being underrated, especially since he can probably fight at 145. Just rewatched the second Maynard fight last night and he won the last 4 rounds IMO after getting stomped in the first. Impressive skill and resolve.

For Hammil, I don't know. I think he is what he is. He is a good fighter but will never beat any of the elite LHW. His most impressive win is against Mark Munoz who is now at MW. And I count that Jones fight as a win for Jones - that fight should have been stopped 10 seconds before that elbow was thrown. Don't know what else the ref was waiting for Jones to do.

really looking forward to their fight in May. Gray better work on his cardio....

pretty much what I said, he will probably never contend for the title. but the guy has beat just about everybody put in front of him....can't fault him for getting matched-up against sub-par competition. I'd love to see him beat up rampage.

Yes you can... As a matter of fact, had jones stood up from that full mount and not thrown an illegal elbow, the fight would have been over

He dislocated hamill shoulder with that throw. The fight was over right then.

Matt didn't stop because of the elbow, he says "my shoulder my shoulder" when the ref stopped action from the elbow.

re: Current Overrated and Underrated Fighters

ok, I stand corrected. I don't remember much from that fight except JJ being dominant and the fight being stopped for a bs elbow. Fact of the matter is I still contend that Hamill is underrated and deserves recognition. Kbeezy, do you have any underground names to add to the list, maybe someone to keep an eye out for?

re: Current Overrated and Underrated Fighters

I know a ton of underrated guys, but guys i think of you guys won't agree with

Guys like mike Pyle, and yves Edwards, IMO are underrated. Yves is good enough to beat any lightweight in the world, but can't put together a streak to get a shot.

He did once, and was considered the uncrowned champ for a which because that was when the UFC scrapped the lightweights for a while.

Clementi is underrated. He can hang with anyone, though he may not always win it.

Tim ruberg is a guy to watch coming up...

Joe doerkson, Jason Black. Two guys that maul anyone who steps in the gym, and I mean ANYONE, but haven't put it together in the big show.

I wouldn't consider anyone you named as underrated. It's such an unpredictable sport, that I can name 5 guys to hang with any one those underrated fighters you listed, and none of my 5 would be considered top 20 in the weight class.

There are a few truly elite guys, and everyone else can be knocked off by nearly anyone on that level. And it happens all the time

Oh and I really think Poirier from Lafayette is gonna be tough to beat at 145 because of his style.

Good striker, hits hard, iron chin, and is ridiculous strong and athletic so he is hard to submit
