happened last night in hs baseball game

runners on 1st and 3rd, no outs. batter (B1) its a sharp grounder to 2B, fields it throws to SS to start the double play.
runner from 1st (R1) is approx. 15-20 feet from 2nd and keeps running straight up towards 2nd in the baseline. SS swipes 2nd base and throws the ball toward 1st, it hits R1 in the chest.

runner from 3rd breaks for home win everyone stops....what should be the call

so R1 was in the base path and running to second?

If he is in the base path then I would think it isn't interference.

Judgement call, but interference on R1, he is out plus B1 is out. R3 goes back to 3rd.

The runner at first is safe, run scores, as long as he was in the basepath, and not within sliding distance. One out.

my argument ( which i lost)

R1 was out by force and has three options to get out of the way.....slide, veer right or left out of the line of the throw.

if he's close to the bag he HAS to slide. I argued that should be 2 outs and R3 returns to 3rd.

I dont think this is interference on R1's part...as long as he is still on the same path to 2nd and doesnt intentionally alter his path to get in the way of the throw, then the runner at first is safe and the run should score

runner has a right to the base path. As long as he's not waving his arms around trying to hit the ball, or leaning in toward it unnaturally or something, there's no interference. The shortstop is supposed to step aside and throw around the runner, not assume he's gonna duck or move out the way.

exactly

it's the SS's job to shuffle his feet and get out of the way to make a play. Now if the runner was intentionally moved out of the baseline to block the SS's path then it would be interference. but he's doing nothing wrong in that situation.

that's the thing though, he's no longer a runner....he was retired at 2nd base.

in a run down scenario it would be different b/c he is a LIVE runner.

Wrong. NFHS Rule 8-4.2.b.2 Runners are never required to slide.....

However, 8-4.1.h says he must avoid hindering an obvious double play.

Dead ball immediately and other runners return to the base occupied at time of pitch.

So what you are saying is that since R1 was OUT he then has to get out of the way? Hmmm, seems to me like the run should score, but there may be some crazy rule.

I'm not aware of a rule that says a runner has to leave the base path when he's out to avoid anything...

I don't think that rule applies to a guy staying on the base path...

If this SS hits him square in the chest after he shuffled a few feet to the side, it was gonna be a wild throw anyway..

Just because the guy hits you doesn't mean you tried to hinder the play.

Not sure if this is legit.

BASE PATH - The base path belongs to the runner EXCEPT when a fielder is in the path attempting to field a batted ball or when a fielder is in the path and in possession of the ball. After a runner has been put out (typically on a force play at second) he has NO rights to the base path. If R1 is put out at second by a long distance, he must duck or get out of the path. If he is hit with the throw while in the path, or makes contact with the fielder who is in the act of throwing, while on his feet, he is guilty. Rule 7.08(b), 7.09(L)
