Can someone explain to me why NFL teams are so interested in Cam Newton?

Or is it mainly media hype?

He only played 1 year in a spread offense, isn't better than an average passer, has obvious character flaws, and has never been anywhere long enough to show he has any decent off-season work ethic.

Only Mike Vick has been successful as a running quarterback in recent years and he is faster and a better passer than Newton.

Can anyone here convince me he won't be a bust?

Because his measurables are awesome, he's a Heisman winner, and just led an SEC team to an undefeated NC. Just those alone will generate a ton of hype.

Of course teams want him, he's like the next Vince Young.

The first part is all that really matters.

He will be another Vince Young. High pick, high expectations...little production.

Obviously he is very physically gifted, and given the right team and structure I bet he could be productive. I think all of some of the younger QB's need is some time and not thrown to the wolves. He probably won't be asked to run a lot, but with his size and mobility, he could definetly be effective at moving the chains.

Better than Jamarcus, worse than Reggie. It would be difficult to do worse than Jamarcus.

I would be surprised if he does better than VY.

He's big, he's got a big arm, and he can throw accurately. If you think your QB coach is a stud, whats NOT to like.

He has never really been forced to sit in the pocket and consistently throw the ball. He was able to throw the ball well in college because teams had to defend the run IMO

So? I'm not willing to take the time to look up all the quarterbacks that had success running the ball in college, but you can't teach size.

Jamarcus Russell was huge and didn't succeed. Drew Brees can't see over the line and won a super bowl. Size is important but certainly no predictor of success.

pretty insightful there

QB is so important, teams will always over value great prospects. Brees is the exception in size.

Honestly, if I was a QB, there would be no fricking way I'd throw at the combine. You are throwing to WRs that you just met a day ago. Do I think Newton is going to succeed? Hell no, but to say you don't know why teams are interested is being naive.

If he goes to a decent team where he doesn't have to start right away with a good coaching staff and veteran players, he would probably be a great player. Then again, he could go the Jamarcus route, get drafted by the Raiders and end up on drugs.

I don't think he's good enough to carry a team, especially if he starts right away on a team like the 49ers, Bills or Panthers, but if developed by a team like the Saints, Falcons, Ravens or team with good players where he wouldn't have to start right away, he could be a really good player.
