As most of you know, Van Chancellor resigned under pressure as the LSU women's head basketball coach Wednesday afternoon. Athletic Director Joe Allevia has already started his search for a replacement for Chancellor. Chancellor was paid close to a half a million dollars per season to coach the Tigers. Alleva said at his press conference that LSU would pay the market price to hire the best coach available.
In men's basketball news, it appears that Trent Johnson will keep his job for at least one more season.
Why was Van forced out and Trent not????

VC took over a pretty elite program and saw it slowly degrade each season.
TJ took over a program that was struggling and had to rebuild it. I give him one more year to show some results.
OH......and VC is white.

Then why could he have won the SEC his first season if he took over a program that was struggling?.......? He should have used that as a giant stepping stone to recruit. Hey we just won the SEC, you want to continue? Come to LSU.......

Who hired Trent?
Who hired Van?
Therein lies the rub.

Vans hire was oh 10 years too late and he ran a solid final four program into the ground
TJ is trying to bring stability to mens basketball
plus ANYONE trying to defend Van Chancellor is a complete moron

Uh the cupboard may have been when depleted when Trent got here but after his 3 recruiting classes it is bare!
Would be much easier to defend Van than Trent. With the subpar West LSU men's bball is playing in a decent coach and recruiter should have had LSU at least at the .500 mark in conference play not repeatedly getting blown out by 20 to 30 points.
He has had 3 recruiting classes should be way more SEC talent on that team than there is now!

Good answer to a stupid question.

It's interesting that not only did Van get forced out, but didn't Alleva put out a letter after the 2009 football season that more or less was a message to Les Miles that he had better get it together? However, TJ seems to get a pass after stumbling and bumbling through the last two years worse than anything that Miles has done. Welcome to Mr. Dukey's PC World!

The same case could be made for Van. He took over a program with eight seniors. After one season he was left with Hightower and the rest were average.

Are you seriously going to compare the level of the two basketball programs from 3 years ago?
5 straight final 4's....vs. an SEC title in TJ's first year.

They are both horrible. Make it a package deal and get rid of both of them.

While I wouldnt say Van is horrible that would at least be consistent and reasonable as opposed to the hypocricy going on now!

Rudy, you are correct. The word horrible is probably too strong in both cases. It just seems like the men's and women's programs have become stagnant and non-competitive. I think it is time for a change in both programs.

quote:I disagree, and imo that's where the disparity lies. The mens program has been non-competitive. The womens program has been competitive, just not at the elite level it used to be. Bottom line is that both programs are markedly worse today than they were the day the current coaches took over, but the womans program is still in a much better place than the mens program. And yet, that's the coach that is being forced out. Clearly, Van is being held to a higher standard than Trent. Maybe it is just because we were used to winning in womens basketball and used to Brady in mens basketball. But for whatever reason, if Johnson were judged by the same standard Chancellor is, he would be gone.
It just seems like the men's and women's programs have become stagnant and non-competitive.
Reminder: I'm not calling for Johnson to be fired, and I did not call for Chancellor to be fired. I am just noting the apparent inconsistency of keeping the one and firing the other.

Van was actually doing LSU a favor by taking over the program after the Pokey thing. I thought Van would stay 2 years and then LSU would do a national search. He just stayed too long. Maybe he got used to the half a mil.
