Too valuable to keep off of the field. Lacking in the height dept. to contain taller WRs (regardless of his hops). Possesses natural ball hawking abilities. Why not convert him to Safety?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and his play definitely ain't broke, so why try to fix it?

Agreed I think the nickel with him playing wild and loose is his natural position and most effective for his skills. , He can blitz or cover from that position and line up all over the place. I think Claiborne. Simon and Ron Brooks in a corner rotation with Brandon Taylor, Eric Reid and and Craig Loston rotating at safety and Mathieu roaming out of the nickel in medium to long situations could be LSU deepest db rotation in history.

This crew is going to be fun to watch over the next 2-3 years. I bet Chavis is salivating right now.

Just read in this article that Hatcher is going to be expected to play some corner/safety in the nickel.

quote:

Baker and Hatcher both raved about one great aspect of Hatcher’s moving down: The team can now seemlessly rotate between nickel and base 4-3 without changing personnel. This, of course, is due to Hatcher’s ability to be able to step back and handle some intermediate coverage.

How is Mathieu going to see the field as much as last season unless he converts to safety or gets one of the starting CB spots?

Hatcher should see a bit of time at Safety in certain situations, but I think that will be more of a changeup/reaction type thing (where the offense changes formations at the line to a 4 or 5 wide set; we can just slide Hatcher back and shift the other two LBs over and voila, a matching nickel formation). I would expect in passing situations and other times when we send in nickel personnel, Mathieu would be the Nickel guy.

I also expect him to spend a good bit of time in the rotation at CB when we're not in a nickel set. Not EVERY WR in the SEC will be too big for him to cover.

Tyrann is not too small to play corner and should see plenty of time opposite of Claiborne. There are some very good corners in the NFL who are "undersized." Some of the top corners in the league are right around 5'8-5'10 Antoine Winfield, Cortland Finnegan, Asante Samuel, and Dunta Robinson.

Lets recall these rivals rankings too...

#1 cover corner

I don't get where any of these questions and assumptions are coming from..Tyrann will be the corner on the other side of Claiborne and he may play the Charles Woodson role and switch to nickel in 3 or more corner sets...why move him to safety with all the talent there? and if you say he's undersized for corner aren't safeties usually bigger than corner's?
