Has anyone here had experience patching areas of your yard w/ new sod? We had a big arse pine tree cut down in our front yard that was sucking the life out of that half of the yard. After hours of pulling up never ending roots, we've finally got the area ready to prep for new sod. We've got centipede, but I'm not 100% sure on what needs to be done to prep the area. The soil is great, but does there need to be any sort of additive/fertilizer to it before laying the new sod? I know we need to till it, rake it, grade it, etc. The total area is about 300 sq/ft. Any thoughts would be muchos gracias'd.

Starter fertilizer underneath. Put sod as close to one another as poossible. Lots of water. It should do well.

you're probably good to go. I planted centipede basically on a sandbar in a backyard and it did ok.

Existing centipede should overtake the new spot. New sod will just take faster.

That's an interesting turn of a phrase.

Oh and regarding the OP: water, water, water, water until you think you have drowned the grass.

Then water it some more.

You can get a few pcs of sod and cut them into smaller plugs say 6"square. Plant them about a foot apart keep it watered it will be solid by the end of summer.

Lay the sod as close as together as possible, it will need to be watered for 30-45 minutes within a half hour of installation and then watered 3 times daily at a rate of 6-8 minutes. Also within the first 3 weeks make sure to keep ALL heavy traffic and any type of maintenance equipment off the newly installed sod. As far a fertilization I would apply a half pound of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft. after you lay the sod, but make sure not to over apply the fertilizer it will burn you sod. Any good starter fertilizer will work fine.

I like to put a layer of sand down over the dirt before putting the sod down.

Does two things: Smooths it out a little better and holds water a little better.

After sod is down I put more sand over it to fill in the cracks.

May want to lime it. Pine needles tend to raise the acidity in soil when they decompose.
