In your opinion, what rule(s) has or have changed the game the most from the game of the 60's-70's.

overtime rule

Certainly big, but I would say 85 player schollie limit has had a bigger impact. Others include...

20 hour practice rule
Coaches being able to call timeout is a big one as well

1972 was the first year freshmen were eligible.

I'm pretty sure just about every program violates this.

I think the plan to take away scholarships from programs that dont graduate their players is going to end up being the biggest.

for current impact, I would go with the 85 scholarship limit.
that really helped the low end of the BCS conferences and some of the high end other conferences, like say, TCU (which is now big east).

I recall that when Pitt won the national championship with Tony Dorsett, his senior class had started out with over 100 in that one class.

The new rule that's gong to be in affect next year will be an issue. The one that says excessive celebration will take actually take away the touchdown instead of the usual 15 yards on the kickoff.

There's no question that what changed the game most were the rules relating to clock management, timeouts, and substitutions.

The game transitioned away from having lean players in good cardio shape to having a bunch of pudgy big guys (even the RBs) trained for short bursts of power.

The scholarship rules shifted the balance of power among schools, but it didn't really change the game. Overtime barely changed the game at all.

It was against the rules, so all you could do was recover it and that was it. You could not advance it.

Oh I see what you mean now. I didn't know it used to be against the rules. How long ago did they change it?
