Doesn't this hurt their business? I know many people who won't get a Netflix account because of the extremely small Instant selection

It's not really up to Netflix, if they had their way every movie would be streaming. The studios are dragging their feet on the issue.
Look at the situation from Warner Brother's side. Netflix pays a one time fee, or maybe a yearly contract of some sort, to license specific Warner programs. Warner gets paid and that's fine, but all of sudden Blu-ray and DVD revenue drops because people are fine with just hitting a button from their couch. In place already is The Warner Archive, a selection of exclusive classic films unavailable anywhere else but that website. You can pay to download the movies for $15 or have them printed onto a DVD-R for an added fee ($20). The studio is already making a bid to stream their own content, and per movie, not unlimited. So which program do you think they want you to use?

I'm waiting for them to make everything instant.

Netflix Instant's playlist is fairly solid imo. They have a lot of good art films and classics

I've watched hundreds of good movies through Netflix Instant, not to mention TV shows.

They can't step it up without stepping up the fee.
I seem to recall reading something recently that they have to pay MUCH MUCH MUCH more for streaming movies.
You can look up the reason why, but there is a huge difference in cost structure for actual DVDs and streaming.
Unless movie studios budge, nothing is going to change.

Apparently if they do not have all the "new" releases it means they have very little content..

As a paying customer, I really can't think of a complaint I have for Netflix. That's taking the price into account. I mean for $9, I could care less if they have all the new movies on instant. They have so many good movies and tv shows at my disposal that otherwise, I would have never been able to watch. Occasionsly, if there's a new movie I want to watch, I just put it at #1 at my DVD Q, and in a day or two I'm watching it.
