How many miles can a diesel engine go before it's no longer considered good?

I am looking at purchasing a used box truck for my small business.

I found a box truck that is the perfect size. It
has a 4.6 liter diesel engine with 240,510 miles on it but they did regular maintenance on it.

Are diesel engines alot more reliable than gas engines? Do you guys think I can get another 100k miles out of this truck?

It can run forever if it's maintained.

it is pointless to measure a diesel engine by miles. measure it by hours.

now, if you are woried about the tires, ball jts, shocks, etc....then you can worry about how many miles are on a diesel powered vehicle.

Our current Dodge dually has over 300k and is less than 5yr old out. Our Peterbuilt has roughly 700k, they will last as long as you take care of them, I would think the motor on the truck you're looking at has a lot of life left, the transmission however could be another story especially if it's an automatic.

More info on the truck?? What brand, what brand motor, auto/manual , dually rear drive?

If maintained properly and not over-worked (designed to pull 20K lb loads but used for consistently for 40K lb loads) then there is no reason it can't go 500K +. Like one of the other guys said, check the other parts of the truck like suspension and transmission. They tend to go before the engine.

I would find a diesel mechanic and pay him to take a look at it. $100 could save you thousands

My dad's friend just rolled over 900,000 in his powerstroke. Dad's has 220k, not a problem ever had. His previous had 400k without any problems.
