Payroll error in my favor question

So I noticed on my paycheck Friday that I was grossly overpaid(like it was twice the amount). I did the right thing and reported it this am to payroll. I am waiting to hear back from them about how they are gonna reclaim their money back(they are gone for the day but mentioned taking it back the next two paychecks when I briefly spoke with them this am). Here is my question...because my check was such a large check, they took out much more in taxes and retirement(obviously). So, if they were to take back the total gross amount, it basically leaves me as if I was only paid $500 Friday. Can they take back the gross amount...even though I already paid taxes on it?

I'm stressing out cause I'm beginning to feel that I'm gonna get screwed for doing the right thing. Any of you money masters of the OT have any experience with this?

Yes, and you should call them again (if they don't call you first) and ask them how they plan to "unravel it"....

That way you have an opportunity to understand "how they will do it", and voice any objection to their plan (if it "screws you"). And don't be afraid to escalate it to their supervisor if you feel their plan is too punitive.

They will adjust your taxes according, if they did not, it would be against the law.

Could they just not withhold taxes on your next income of equal amount?

I've already left a voicemail with the payroll manager expressing my concerns. Told her in the nicest and most polite way possible on a voicemail that I should not have to be penalized for their huge mistake and reminded her that I reported the mistake immediately.

This just sucks cause I may possibly need to come up with up to $1000 for car repairs in the next week....this is the worst time for playing around with my money.

Lith...I started the thread on the money board first. They just whacked the OT thread. I was just being impatient....lesson learned OT admins I promise

Sounds like the payroll manager didn't preview their payroll before submitting it.

You don't have $1,000 to spare for car repairs, yet you claim to be a nurse? I was under the impression that nurses made decent money.

Define "decent"? They can be anywhere from 45,000-70,000 depending on region and amount of work experience/rank. (Correct me if those estimates are not in the ball park).

I make good money as a nurse. But I'm not great at saving(I'm trying to get better though) Also I just got back from a vacation to Hawaii, where I had spent my vacation money from my savings. Right now that I'm back I'm working 50-60 hours a week to save up for various things.
