Do it make much of a difference when companies are hiring whether or not you have a business degree, or poli sci?

Companies tend not to hire counsel right out of law school, regardless of undergrad degree nor a practicing lawyer that hasn't practiced the type of law they are looking for -typically transactional. Further they tend to bring in outside counsel they have worked with - away from a firm.

No I think he is saying that it does not matter much and that I will be working in firm to begin with any how.
If nothing else it looks like it would be better to do poli sci and do well in law school.

I know some recent (as in 2010) Loyola grads that do transactional work at Jones Walker and Adams and Reese. The JW one, however, has her CPA and two years of experience and finished in the top 10% of her class.

Oh you haven't even picked a major yet? Engineering + law degree = bank.

I was wondering if instead of CPA I got a series 7 and I was thinking that would help.

She's got an MBA too. I don't think the Series 7 would remotely help you at all.

Haha, no I am not good at math, that is why have not chose the business route yet, but I think I would enjoy corporate law the most.

Yeah, at a firm. Typically, companies don't hire in-house counsel out of law school. Some do but most don't. It all depends. The most common route is law school, firm (transactional/corporate) work 5+ years, relationship with company or apply for in-house position.

Do something that gives you other opportunities besides law school. You will change a lot as a person from your freshman year to your senior year.

Do you have any idea what "corporate law" even means or entails?

I have thought about that I am doing criminal justice as well. But I dont want to do business I am worried it might hurt my chances of getting into a decent law school.

You are gonna have to study no matter what. If you want to get into a good law school, take time to do the extra work. Get summer jobs at law firms, join clubs, get involved.

Why, because you fear you won't graduate with as high a GPA?

Also, if you think you'll have a shot at a very good law school (i.e., you score high on the verbal sections of standardized tests and have a high GPA), then I'd advise you to stear away from poli-sci as a major.

I once spent a summer painting houses with a poli-sci major that did not get into law school. If you need more motivation to major in something marketable spend a summer painting houses!
