The angle to retaining JC as DC, should LM bolt to AA, is..

A Defensive hire in Pelini, Patterson, Strong,etc..probably means the end of Chief Era in BR.

This is probably not a popular view w/ many Tennessee fans, but I'd think he'd do fine for you guys as Head Coach if he hired 1-2 great recruiters. You have Frank Wilson, so that's a start. I really don't see what Pelini brings to the table that he doesn't.
That being said, your AD is probably not gusty enough to roll the dice on an assistant. I'm guessing he'll go after someone who has been a head guy before.

it would be a horrible move for LSU right now. if we are freed from les we need to make a serious move not a move that could send us to tenn level with the quickness.

Why would any AD at a school that has been paying 4M to it's last two HCs, hire a Pelini or Chavis as it's Head Coach?
When there are guys like Petersen, Patterson, Strong, Mullen, Malzahn, Ferentz, Fisher,etc..
