For those of you who don't know who he is, he was the 1955 NCAA Heavyweight Champion for LSU.

This is a press photo of him knocking Bill Cheadle of Oklahoma out of the ring

Most here don't realize the history of LSU in the sport..another star was Dub Robinson, former tennis coach, Johnny's dad.

I went to a signing that Johnny Robinson was doing. Everyone had football stuff, I brought a LSU tennis racket cover and had him sign it. He was the 1957 SEC Champion in tennis.

In the late '70s, Dub Robinson came out of retirement and filled in as an interim when the tennis coach resigned. When there were disagreements among team members, Coach Robbie would pull an antique set of boxing gloves out of his old station wagon and tell them to put them on in order to resolve the dispute. There were no takers, but tennis players boxing at the varsity courts would have been hilarious to see. Coach Robbie was a class act.

Didn't he used to own a gas station on Perkins?

Used to stop by his gas station weekly. Nice guy that you'd never imagine was a former boxer. A really calm personality. Haven't seen him in awhile. Last time I saw him, his health was obviously declining. Maybe the reason he closed his station.

His station is not closed, it is located on Jefferson between Blubonnet and Airline. It is just a auto repair shop now. He is retires and his son runs the shop.

He looks to be in great health and says he works out every morning.

Is the repair shop in the same location? The last time I stopped there, the place looked junky. Mattresses and other items were thrown into the garge area where the repair lifts were and there were a slew of moving trucks for rental outside.
I asked a guy working there what happend to the gas station & inspection sticker service. He told me all they did there was rent moving trucks now.
Perhaps when I saw him last he was ill. He was moving very slow & seemed kinda out of it. If his health is fine, I'm glad to hear it.

Speaking of Crowe Peale and the LSU boxing team, a team mate of his, Moo Sciambra, died recently in N.O. where he had been a judge. Moo was three times Golden Glove Champ while at LSU in the light welter-weight division. He had lightening fast fists and was a delight to behold...and smart as a whip. Rest in Peace Moo.

What's the name of that shop? Curious minds inquire.

It's a Texaco station but all they do is rent Budget trucks now. His dickhead son runs it but it's for sale I heard.

I bought my first car from him. It was his old 85 blazer, I got it in High School. Both my brothers were grease monkeys for him when he was still running the station.
