installing a metal roof over a porch

I have the porch built and it is ready for a metal roof. This is the current state of affairs:

]

This is the first time I've ever done anything like this, so I am taking each step slowly and with plenty of advice. I am curious about the installation of the roof. I am planning to use normal galvanized metal roofing. Should I get the regular panels at Lowes or should I look elsewhere? How do I ensure that there is no leakage between the panels or anywhere else for that matter? Any general tips are very much appreciated.

If you get the corrugated stuff and let it overlap it shouldn't leak at all.

Here you go.

I would not go with regular corrugated roofing from the hardware store.
Looks like shite and leaks at the seams no matter what you do.
Get a good coated material with locking seams and use screws with rubber grommets attached.

Why not match with shingles?

I used the master rib roofing on my 8' x 8' gazebo and my 10x12 shed roof. Great stuff and very easy to do.

I got it through SOS at Lowes.

Your welcome to come over and check it out. I actually have about 5 sheets leftover, they come in 40" widths and the desired length you want.

Master Rib metal roof.

I got blue in color but you can get whatever color you desire.

The main thing is to pre measure each hole and pre drill. I installed both gazebo and shed roof myself and they survived gustav (wish I could say the same for my house roof)

This is where I got mine

Looks great so far. I wouldn't use the plain galvanized stuff from Home Depot or Lowe's. There is nicer looking and heavier gauge stuff out there (think tree limbs and light hail). There are places like this all over the country. When you go to these places that sell this material, they can walk you through it very easily. I asked a lot of questions and they helped me.

Go see one of the Harrison's at Metal Supply on S. Choctaw. (225) 923-3078. They have can cut the panels for you to an exact length, and give you every thing you need. They will also fabricate all of the Ridge Caps, Rakes, Dams, Wall Runner Flashing and drip edges you really need to make it watertight and not cause problems where it meets your existing house. Just give him all of the dimensions, and they'll take it from there.

FWIW, if you are in the Southdowns or Garden District areas, your neighbors may rat you out to the associations if you use the galvanized Lowes material.

Good Luck

go with really high quality metal interlocking with screws/rubber gaskets. not cheap corrugated tin.

Also, big tip. Thoroughly clean off all metal shavings from the roof. If you leave shavings on the roof after screwing in the panels it can literally ruin the roof.

Use the crimped, and not the corrugated. We have two barns on our property, crimped works much better and has no leakage.

yeah thats why I went with master rib. Pretty tough stuff but the key to making it look nice is the screw placement. I had to special order the master rib from lowes and it took like a week to get in along with the ridge cap and screws. I didnt like the cheap tin stuff.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I would not go with the corrugated stuff after reading these things. I will give these guys a holla or the folks Mud pointed me too.

make sure you get the screws with the rubber washers. the rubber or whatever it is flattens and expands preventing leaks at the screws. looks good so far.
